The Ashes 2023 Series took a vicious turn in Fever Lord, where fans and players alike expressed fury at Australia's controversial deadlock over Johnny Bairstow on day five.

England denounced Australia's decision not to withdraw their appeal when Alex Carey picked up the ball. on Barstow's stumps when he came out of the ground, believing that Cameron Green had finished the game and the ball was dead.

Ben Stokes, whose terrific 155 innings weren't enough to save England, called Bairstow's stalemate a 'game-winning moment' and said he would have withdrawn the appeal, while coach Brandon McCallum felt that this would mean the end of warm relations between the teams, saying: “I can not imagine that we will drink beer with them anytime soon.”

Australia was booed for the remainder of the match and called on the MCC, Lord's keepers, to investigate alleged “verbal abuse” and “physical contact” with their players as they returned to the dressing room during lunch. Usman Khawaja and David Warner were among the players who named specific MCC members.

MCC members clashed with the Australian team in a long room

Bairstow, who scored 10 points, ducked under Green's bouncer in the 52nd half and then began to walk down the field, as players usually do between balls. But Carey, Australia's goalkeeper, kicked the stumps away as soon as he saw that Bairstow was ready to leave his crease.

By the rules of the game, the ball was not dead when Bairstow began to go out of his area, which meant that he could be stumped. After Carey's throw knocked out bail, Australia filed an appeal for dismissal, which was granted by third judge Marais Erasmus after he noticed that Bairstow was clearly out of place.

England captain Stokes addressed the referees after being fired, apparently offended by what happened. As the crowd waited for Lord's decision, they booed loudly. The decision was greeted with cries of “Same old Aussies, always cheating.”

Should Australia withdraw its appeal over Johnny Bairstow's controversial statement?

Stuart Broad, who took over from Bairstow after he was fired, appeared to have told Carey into a microphone, “You will forever be remembered for this.” He also told Australia captain Pat Cummins: “This is the worst thing I've ever seen in cricket.”

As tensions lingered on the pitch, Broad continued to speak to the Australian players about the incident. He landed his bat very carefully after each ball, a clear allusion to Bairstow's stalemate.

Eoin Morgan, former England ODI captain, told Sky Sports: “Very smart work by Alex Carey.” Mike Atherton, former England Test captain, described it as “Jonny Bairstow's calm cricket game.”

“It all depends on when the referee calls 'end',” Glenn McGrath said in a special test BBC match. “Cary was throwing stumps before Bairstow could walk.”

Jim Maxwell, the legendary Australian commentator working for the Test Match Special, was one of the few on the air who thought Australia was in the spotlight. wrong.

“It leaves a sour taste,” Maxwell said. “They should have withdrawn the appeal.”

According to the Laws of the Game, a ball is dead when both sides think it is. While Bairstow clearly believed the ball was dead – the removal was due to the last ball of the over, the 52nd inning – Australia did not.

Rule 20.1.2 states that: “A ball is considered dead when it becomes clear to the umpire at the far end of the bowler that the fielding side and both batters at the wicket no longer consider it to be in play.” According to the third referee's interpretation of the Rules, Erasmus gave Burstow a break.

Cummins said of this incident: “All credit to Carey, he rolled him over the stumps, Johnny left his crease – leave the rest to the judges.”

Bairstow was clearly out of bounds when the ball hit the stump. become more mature”, he now believes that such actions are contrary to the spirit of the game. He described Barstow as “confused.”

“Looking back, I was lucky enough to play for a long period of time,” he said. “You will learn that the game and the spirit of the game is very important. We have one thing that other sports may not need to support and that is such an important part. You have to live with it, and that's life. From our point of view, if we were in the same position, we could make a different decision.

“I think you have to make decisions in the moment, they are not easy to make and sometimes they can have quite a big impact not only on games but also on people's characters. It's complicated. By the letter of the law, this is excluded. From our point of view, Johnny felt that he was definitely not trying to run away, and he felt that, as far as the referees are concerned, they actually announced that the ball was dead.

“It's one of those moments that's hard to swallow and when you look at the small lead at the end and think of a player like Johnny Bairstow who got up and raced so many times in the chase, it's incredibly disappointing, but at the end of the day, a lot of people are going to have opinions on it, they will be sitting on both sides of the fence and probably the most frustrating aspect is that it will probably be the most talked about part of what was a great test match and that is pretty disappointing” .

Cummins said relations between the teams remain amicable, while Stokes said he expected a tradition of players sharing beers at the end of the series, despite McCallum's announcement. Stokes could not hide his contempt for Australia's behavior, saying he would have withdrawn the appeal had he “taken the whole situation into account” in the same situation.

“I'm not disputing the fact that he's missing because he's missing,” Stokes said. “I would seriously consider the spirit of the game and would I potentially win the game when something like this happens? It wouldn't be.”

Stokes added that he expects the crowds at the remaining three Tests, starting from Headingley on Thursday, to upset Australia over the decision.

“I definitely think it will build up,” he said. “Australia had a history and they've been here a few times since then and I think they're all used to the English crowd. When we go to Australia, we are also scolded. Look, I think that's part of the sport we play: thousands of people want their team to win and they just jump on anything. We get in Australia – 90,000 Aussies in the MCG all berate you. That's part of the deal.

“It was nice to see Lord's, a place that isn't famous for the atmosphere and noise, today was one of the days that Lord's showed up.”

Verdict : Bairstow was lethargic – Australians did the right thing

    Skailde Berry

Match officials got it absolutely right, as they did with Mitchell Stark's non-catch on Saturday night. Johnny Barstow was deadlocked.

The key point is that the ball is only dead when both sides think it is.

Bairstow obviously thought the ball was dead after he dodged bouncer Cameron Green and then hit the crease again with the bat. But this is only half the picture.

The Australians, or rather Alex Carey, did not consider the ball to be dead and the over to be completed. Consequently, Carey was afraid of stumps under his arm and caught Bairstow wandering around his court.

Hundreds of goaltenders across the country this weekend tried to do the same: surprise a dopey batsman who had climbed out of his court. .

And, what's more, it's a tactic that Bairstow himself often used while holding the wicket. He would have done exactly what Carey did and would probably try to do so soon.

Attention! Or let the batsman beware. He must protect his gate.
