Australia poked Bair – now everyone is looking at Johnny to respond

According to fellow Yorkshireman Joe Root, Barstow is still pissed off about his stalemate at Lord and that will give him extra motivation to compete in the Trial of Ashes on his home soil.

Leeds-based street artist Burley Banksy has already made his point clear. One of his works, next to the players' entrance at Headingley, does not display Bairstow 10, the same score he had when Alex Carey threw the stumps and provoked a diplomatic row, as if he should forever be remembered as such, and his dismissal never happened.

Barstow has scored 20, 16 and 10 since scoring 78 in the first Test, and his summer has yet to make it to his stellar 2022. in your mind to set yourself on fire.

He had an apoplexy in Lord's dressing room and had a cold look at a thousand yards when he “shaked hands” with the Australians on Sunday night at the post-match formalities.

Bairstow has thrived in situations like this before. Last summer, during his gold run, he was provoked by Virat Kohli, who chided him for his slow scoring in the first inning at Edgbaston. Barstow was 13 of 61 births when Kohli spoke up.

He took 93 of his next 79 and later told his teammates, “When are they going to fucking learn?” In many ways, this is the perfect time to play a home Test in front of his adoring Yorkshire crowd, who will be out for Aussie blood.

“I don't think he took it well. I don't think anyone would, do they?” said his old friend Ruth, when asked how Bairstow reacted on Sunday. “From his point of view, he did not receive any advantage.

“It didn't look like he was at the non-hitter's end, trying to sneak or kick the ball out of his crease, trying to take out ways to get sacked or make sure the ball didn't make it to the cordon. So yeah, he felt a little heavy.

“Johnny really thrives on things like this; did before. Playing on his home ground, I'm sure he'll want to entertain the local crowd. You can bet your last dollar that he will keep the bit in his mouth. It's set up nicely for him, but you still have to go and do it.

“These big shows always have something, and that's it, I think, and Johnny should be involved in this. Going back to Edgbaston last year, someone said something to him – I think it was Virat – and it pissed him off. Let's hope it happens again.”

Three times Johnny Bairstow thrive in anger

Bairstow is in a different mood now and it takes a little more than being offended to crush this Aussie team. He recently became a father for the first time when his son was born shortly before the Irish Test, and he is recovering from the brutal reality of a horrific leg injury that adds a level of pressure to wicket-batting.

    The Fawkes Debate Returns

He fared better at Lord's after a missed dead end and three bad catches at Edgbaston reopened the debate about choosing him over Ben Fawkes, but he knows it won't take long for the issue to come up again. .

Ollie Pope's injury opened the door for Fawkes' return later in the series, which would push Bairstow back to normal. Holding back emotions will be a challenge for England and Bairstow.

It's clear they're using the furore as a motivation, a way to shift the narrative away from a 2-0 loss in the series, and Headingley will be even more biased than usual.

Extra safety measures have been taken to anticipate any flashpoints, but earplugs will be required for any Aussie entering the field in front of the west terrace. “Use all that fuel, but do it in a very controlled manner,” Ruth said of how to proceed in this case.

“That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t show any emotion. Maybe that's how you turn on someone like Johnny, who is very different from Ben. Everyone will handle it a little differently, but he's still very much in control of everything and doesn't let him get too carried away.”

England played better than Lord at Edgbaston and at least entered the third Test with the big hundreds of Root and Ben Stokes already in the series.

This is not the same as trailing 2-0 after two overseas series of Trials of Ashes, which Ruth has experienced in all his trips to Australia, twice as a captain. England lost by two wickets and 43 runs and know they should have won at least one of those matches.

“We have nothing to lose,” Ruth said. “We're throwing everything at it and I think it's time for us to start writing our script. I think you can look at some of the losses we had on the last tour of Australia, they were by a wide margin and we were heavily outplayed. I don't think it's been like that in every series so far.”
