Stuart Hogg, the former Scotland captain, announced his retirement immediately and will not play for his country in the Rugby World Cup later this year.

31-year-old Hogg previously said that he would hang his boots on the floor after the tournament in France. However, in a statement on Sunday, he said his body was “not capable of doing what I wanted and needed.”

Hogg's last appearance for his country came at this year's Six Nations, when he won his 100th cap against Ireland before having to retire with an ankle injury.

His his last game as a professional player came against the Exeter Chiefs in a European Cup semi-final loss to La Rochelle.

During his successful career, Hogg has won the Gallagher Premier League and Champions Cup with Exeter and Pro12 with Glasgow, as well as being involved in Scotland's recent Kolkata Cup victories and touring with the British and Irish Lions three times.

In a statement, he said: “It's hard to start, but it's with great sadness and great pride that I announce my immediate retirement from rugby.

“I fought tooth and nail to make it to the Rugby World Cup but this time my body couldn't do what I wanted and needed. We knew this day would come sooner or later, I just didn't think it would happen so soon.

“It's hard to put into words the impact the game has had on my life. I will retire knowing that I gave my body and heart to rugby. I will always be grateful to this amazing community and can't wait to start my journey as a proud supporter of Scotland.”

Scotland manager Gregor Townsend said: “After the news of Stewart, we would like to wish him all the best in his retirement. He was an outstanding player in Scotland and his career was marked by many achievements, highlights and special memories.

“We respect his decision to leave now and understand the stresses and challenges his body has gone through in recent seasons. He has been an integral part of our team over the years and has also led the team to famous victories over England and France in 2021 and we all wish him well in his post-rugby career. We look forward to his return to support us from the stands.”

Among Hogg's many thanks were former Scotland international Jim Hamilton, who wrote: “One of the greatest players of all time. It was an honor for me to play and watch you. See you soon on the mic brother.”

A message from the official World Rugby account reads: “Thank you for all you have given to the game. Incredible career.” There were also non-rugby-related kind words for Hogg, with former Scottish footballer Ellie McCoist writing: “One of the best friends. Gave us great joy for years to come. Congratulations on a great career.”

Roarid McConnochie of Bath is set to replace Hogg. McConnochie played for England at the 2019 Rugby World Cup but has not been capped since then and has now qualified for Scotland as he was first called up by Townsend during the Six Nations. Another Bath player, Josh Bayliss from the back line, replaced the injured Andy Christie.
