Family supercar Koenigsegg Gemera: new transmission and V8 engine as an option

Swedish company Koenigsegg Automotive AB has published the final specifications of the Gemera four-seater hybrid supercar, its production will begin at the end of 2024.

The Koenigsegg Gemera debuted as a prototype in March 2020 at the Geneva Motor Show, but production has yet to begin. The latest company press release is about the expansion of the Angelholm factory: the new 11,000 m2 Gripen Atelier facility is built just for the demonstration and production of the Gemera, production is scheduled to start at the end of next year, shipment of finished machines to customers will begin in the first half of 2025, since each instance needs to be thoroughly tested.

The technical concept of Gemera has changed significantly over the past three years: the “stepless” KDD (Koenigsegg Direct Drive) transmission, which has only the main gear, has been replaced by the 9-speed LST (Light Speed Transmission) already familiar to us from the CC850 and Jesko models. ) with seven clutches, its new version in conjunction with Gemera is called LSTT (Light Speed Tourbillon Transmission). Company founder Christian von Koenigsegg claims that LSTT provides better dynamic performance and greater driver involvement in the process of control compared to KDD.

The LSTT box is docked with a gasoline internal combustion engine located in front of the rear axle, it is now offered in two versions. The first is a 2.0-liter 3-cylinder TFG (Tiny Friendly Giant) unit with two turbochargers, its maximum output is 600 hp. and 600 Nm. The second is a 5.0-liter HV8 (Hot V8) biturbo engine with a maximum output of 1500 hp. and 1500 Nm. The two versions of the supercar are respectively called TFG and HV8, the electrical part of the power plant is the same, but it also has changes compared to the 2020 prototype: instead of three electric motors (one on the front axle, two on the rear), only one front one is now used.

Dark Matter electric motor, its name is translated into Russian as “dark energy”

The front wheels through a long carbon-fiber crankshaft in a carbon-fiber tunnel rotate the internal combustion engine and/or an electric motor mounted longitudinally on the front axle and docked with the differential. In the 2020 Gemera, the front electric motor produced 405 hp. and 500 Nm, and now it has been replaced by a new, more powerful six-phase Dark Matter electric motor with a combined radial-axial magnetic flux (Raxial Flux) and a maximum output of 800 hp. and 1250 Nm. The Dark Matter electric motor is housed in a 13L forged carbon casing and weighs only 39kg.

A flat 850-volt traction battery in a carbon-fiber housing is located under the floor in the front of the cabin, its capacity is 14 kWh. The electric power reserve is about 50 km, while even with the internal combustion engine turned off, the supercar remains all-wheel drive, that is, the Dark Matter electric motor is mechanically connected to the rear wheels through the LSTT transmission. Moreover, in any mode, thrust vector control is implemented on each wheel, but how exactly, the press release does not say. The maximum cumulative output of the Gemera TFG power plant is 1400 hp. and 1850 Nm, Gemera HV8 – 2300 hp and 2750 Nm. Dynamic characteristics have not yet been published. The power-to-weight ratio for the Gemera TFG is 0.77 hp/kg, for the Gemera HV8 it is 1.11 hp/kg. The volume of the fuel tank is 115 l.

The Gemera carbon fiber body without central pillars has not changed much compared to the prototype of the 2020 sample: ordinary exterior mirrors appeared instead of cameras, lighting equipment was slightly updated, in the form options will be offered a more aggressive aerodynamic body kit (Ghost package). Inside, there are four full-fledged adult seats with electric adjustment and heating, a separate multimedia screen for second-row riders, a bunch of cup holders, exquisite finishes and a high-quality audio system. The total volume of the two luggage compartments is only 200 liters.

Price list and circulation of the Koenigsegg Gemera have not yet been announced. In 2020, the company announced that it would produce only 300 copies of the four-seater supercar.
