The Japanese company is preparing another novelty on its new rear-wheel drive platform, and at the end of last month, spy photos of test specimens in camouflage. Using them, we decided to imagine what the car would look like.
The first model built on the new transverse-engine platform with basic rear-wheel drive was the CX-60 mid-size crossover, which premiered last spring. In early February of this year, it was joined by the flagship SUV with the CX-90 index, aimed at the North American market. Now, Mazda is preparing a CX-80 model that will take an intermediate position between them, and fresh spy photos show all the features of the crossover's appearance.
The renders are based on spy photos, so all dimensions and proportions match the real car. The CX-80 will actually be a three-row version of the CX-60. From him, the novelty will borrow the front part with a large grille and small headlights, even the bumper may not be changed. On the front fenders, exactly the same decorative inserts are visible as in the «sixties», and the differences begin with the central pillar of the body. The new crossover will receive an increased wheelbase, the entire increase of which will go to the rear doors. The massive rear is designed in the style of the flagship crossover CX-90, while the CX-80 will receive an original rear bumper. Another characteristic detail that will distinguish the new SUV from its co-platforms is the shape of the rear side windows, slightly reminiscent of the “Hofmeister bend”, which is used on BMW models.

As already mentioned, the CX-80 will be built on the new Skyactiv Multi Solution platform Scalable Architecture. There is no confirmed information about the engine range yet, we can only assume that it will be partially or completely borrowed from the CX-60. The base crossover is equipped with a 2.5-liter petrol Skyactiv-G with 188 hp. (250 Nm). It is also part of a hybrid power plant with a 136-horsepower electric motor (250 Nm), the total output of which is 327 hp. and 500 Nm. There is also a 6-cylinder 3.3-liter turbodiesel with a return of 231 hp. and 500 Nm in the basic version or 254 hp. and 550 Nm, complete with a 48-volt mild-hybrid makeweight.
