Jordan Speth and Justin Thomas bought a minority stake in Leeds United, but fellow golfer Ricky Fowler pulled out of the deal after the club were relegated to the Championship.
American investment group 49ers Enterprises, which also owns an NFL team. The San Francisco 49ers are awaiting EFL approval for their takeover after agreeing to increase their stake in the club by buying a majority stake in Andrea Radrizzani.
Both three-time major tournament winner Spite and two-time winner Thomas, who are close friends, have joined 49ers.
“The relegation wasn't perfect, but then we got in touch with a group of 49ers who were buying a big stake in Leeds United to do what they do so well everywhere they touched and thought it would be a really cool opportunity.” Spit said. Sky Sports after flying to the UK for this week's Scottish Open.
“You're all set. Me and Justin [Thomas] are in a very minority but larger organization of the 49ers.
“They [the 49ers] reviewed [after relegation] and then we had to decide if we were going to do it or no.
“We've always wanted to do it and in the end it was probably the best deal if they can get to the [Premier League] soon.”
Clearly the deal with the 49ers is £400m before how the club was relegated, but renegotiated the price to £170m and when asked about Fowler's alleged involvement, Spieth added: “I don't think so. I think he decided against it once they were relegated.”
Speight, Thomas and Fowler were on a trip to the UK this week, playing at Sunningdale Golf Course in Surrey and also visiting Wimbledon ahead of the Scottish Open and the Open next week at Royal Liverpool.
“That So. big city, historic club, great location on Elland Road and once we got to know it, we knew it could be really exciting,” said the 29-year-old. “We are just looking, but I am very happy that I have a team that I am emotionally invested in. I've been following Premier League football quite closely over the past few years, so hopefully there will be a championship from time to time. Premier League very soon.
“It was cloudy [on the way up], we were hoping to see it [Elland Road] on the way up. We're not too far away from that in Liverpool, but I don't know if it will work on this trip, but I'd like to be there someday.”
Spita, Thomas and Fowler introduced Leeds to Leeds. Billy Foster, English golfer Matt Fitzpatrick's caddy, is originally from Yorkshire and is a fan of the club.
