Alex Carey said he suffered some 'unpleasant things' after sparking controversy about Johnny Bairstow, but adamant he wouldn't hesitate to do the same if given the opportunity again .
An Australian goalkeeper stumped Barstow's bowling out of Cameron Green on the last day of the Trial of the Lord — a defining moment in Australia's 43-run win. Although the dismissal was in keeping with the Laws of the Game and defended by most of the former England captains, including Michael Vaughan, it drew huge criticism, especially from members of the MCC, who subsequently abused Australia in the Long Room. Carey was then subjected to severe abuse from the crowd at Headingley during England's three-wicket victory the previous week, including chants of «Take off your shoes if you hate Carey.»
And Carey broke his silence on the matter by stating that although he was subjected to abuse after the incident, he does not regret that he suffered the same fate while playing for South Australia.
“If you are on the side Australia, you will receive amazing support. And if you're on the side of England, then it's probably the other way around,» Carey told The Age. “Everyone has the right to their opinion, and I absolutely respect it. And then everyone has the right to their opinion about the spirit of cricket. There are a few chants that I hummed as I hit the ball, just trying to change the words a bit.

“They say some nasty things, but this is Ash. Before that, too, they said unpleasant things. So yes, I feel really well supported. I think the whole group does. I still think we have a lot of fans from Australia, and from England I don't think we've gained any, but we probably haven't lost anyone.»
Carey, who believes the incident has brought the Australian team closer together and said he is glad his teammates are «having our back», also shared his thoughts as he was about to put Bairstow in a dead end.
“We were switched over to the fact that it was a dodgeball plan and it seemed like Johnny was very interested in getting out of the way; he didn't take any punches,» Carey said. «When he crouched, it was obvious that his first move was pretty much out of his crease, so I instinctively grabbed the ball, threw the stumps down, and the rest is history.
«Once I did that, I quit right away. And then, I think once the bail was taken, the third referee should decide that he is released or not, or the field judges as well, and he was issued, and then, yes, I think, see how much has played out since then. ; it was a bit surprising.”
Cary spoke about being previously stumped by a goalkeeper after leaving his crease too early in a club game for Glenelg, saying his captain then told him to wise up to opportunities for such layoffs. Carey also became the subject of a strange story during the Third Trial when Sir Alastair Cooke suggested that he had not paid for a haircut in Leeds. However, the wicket-keeper reported that he hadn't cut his hair shortly before the World Testing Championship final in London.
«Yeah, the hair hasn't been cut since we were in Chelsea,» he said. “It definitely has to do with pruning. But no, I'm not that tight-fisted[-fisted].»
