The current Ford Transit of the seventh generation in European chronology debuted ten years ago and in 2018 survived a planned restyling, and now the van version for Europe received a number of technical updates.
Ford Transit today is a global model, its technical filling varies greatly depending on the place of production and market. In Russia, for example, a pre-styling van was produced at the Sollers plant in Yelabuga before well-known geopolitical events. Last autumn, the Sollers Ford joint venture finally collapsed, while the European Transit, meanwhile, continues to live its own life. By 2024, Ford has prepared a number of new things for the van in terms of software and hardware.
In Europe, the Ford Transit is offered with front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, but only front-wheel drive Transits can be equipped with an automatic transmission, which is now a 6-speed, and will be an 8-speed from 2024. The new box has slightly improved the efficiency of the van, and the maximum permissible gross weight has increased by 700 kg to 4250 kg. The permissible gross weight of a van with a trailer increased immediately by 1,750 kg to 6,000 kg. The permissible load on the front axle has increased from 1850 to 2000 kg.
New 16-inch wheels with lighter hubs and new brakes also contributed to the increase in load capacity – together they reduced the curb weight of the van by 27 kg. The brakes are also now easier to maintain, replacing them on all four wheels in just two hours.
In the cabin of the European Transit, the former 8-inch multimedia screen has given way to a larger 12-inch one, already familiar to us from the American version of the model. The larger screen “absorbed” the microclimate unit, which is not very convenient. The instrument panel with pointer dials has been replaced by a fully electronic instrument panel with an 8-inch center section. The available set of electronic driver assistants has been significantly expanded, up to adaptive cruise control with traffic mode.
For forwarding drivers who work on Transit in the city and leave the cab hundreds of times a day to give/pick up a parcel, an auxiliary electronic add-on Delivery Assist has been developed, it is available for vans with automatic transmission and electric version: when you turn on the “parking” mode (P ) all doors are automatically blocked except for the one used by the driver, and the “emergency gang” is turned on. When the driver returns to the car and presses the brake pedal, the engine starts automatically and the emergency gang turns off. Thus, according to Ford, you can save up to 20 seconds on each delivery.
In addition, the updated Transit will have a high-speed 5G modem for quick software updates and the Upfit telemetry system, which allows you to control the operation of an emergency vehicle on the screen of the multimedia system. equipment, such as refrigerator temperature.
Changes in the power line have not been announced, now the European “hydrocarbon” Transit is equipped with only 2.0-litre EcoBlue 105 to 185 hp turbodiesel.
Orders for the upgraded Transit will be accepted by Ford dealers in Europe this month, but production in Turkey won't start until next year, the first modernized copies will be shipped to customers in the summer of 2024.
