The two charges against Ryan Giggs were dropped and the retrial dropped. after prosecutors dropped three charges against him in a lengthy case involving his former partner, Kate Greville.
Giggs, 49, still the most successful footballer in the history of the English game in terms of trophies won, was not at Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday to hear Peter Wright KC, on behalf of the Crown, say he will not proceed with a retrial on two charges of assault and one of coercion.
This saga has been going on for two years and eight months since Giggs was originally arrested in November 2020. In the meantime, he was forced to step down as manager of the Wales men's team and miss out on Euro 2020, which took place a year later, as well as the World Cup final before Christmas.
Sources close to him say he intends to immediately resume his managerial career and that he is acquitted by a formal acquittal by Judge Hilary Manley. On July 31, Giggs was scheduled to appear in court for a second time on three charges against him of assault and coercion with former partner Ms Greville, as well as conventional assault on her sister Emma.
In August last year, he appeared before the first trial, during which the court heard the intimate details of the couple's relationship, but the jury was unable to reach a verdict on this matter. People close to Giggs say he still has the desire to coach at the highest level possible and feels he has unfinished business in management.
He left his job in Wales in a golden era for the team so that the trial would not have a direct bearing on World Cup preparations. In court, Mr. Wright said that Ms. Greville «indicated a reluctance» to testify in the retrial because testifying in the first trial «damaged» her and her sister. He added: «This is not a flippant decision.»
He added, «In that case, we don't officially offer any evidence for points one, two, and three.» Judge Manley replied, «I formally acquit on these counts.» Friends say it was a period of great stress for the former United player, who is still the most successful player in English football history in terms of trophies won.
But, having had time to think for almost three years of his life on pause, he is ready to go to football again. Chris Doe, a spokesman for the defense, said: «Giggs is deeply relieved that the prosecution has finally come to an end after nearly three years of fighting to clear his name.»
“He has always been innocent of these charges. Very, very many lies were told about him in court. Now he has been found not guilty of all charges, and in the future he would like to restore his life and career as an innocent person.
Giggs applied for a number of club positions before being named national team manager by the Football Association of Wales in January 2018. For the past three years, he has worked at Salford City, a League Two club he owns with a number of United teammates, including Gary Neville and David Beckham, and Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim.
Recently at Salford, Giggs worked as the director of the main team and performance, and he liked this role. However, he has ambitions to work in the Premier League.
