Expensive and meticulous: an exemplary restomod from Velocity based on the classic Ford Mustang

Velocity Restorations in the US state of Florida has begun accepting orders for the Velocity Signature Series Ford Mustang Fastback restomod, which combines the carefully preserved original style of the classic Mustang with modern technical stuffing .

The USA is the birthplace of restomoding, modernized classic Mustangs are a dime a dozen here, but finding a sample that would match the original model as closely as possible in style is not at all easy: as a rule, tuners greatly change the appearance of the sporktar and especially the interior, in which they put a modern electronic “offal” – all this often looks rather tasteless.

Specialists from Velocity Restorations have a completely different approach: their main profile is restoration, but at the request of customers, the workshop also offers a technical upgrade. Velocity Restorations specializes primarily in classic Ford Bronco SUVs and Ford F-Series pickups, and recently moved into first-generation Mustangs and launched the Signature Series project. So far, the only copy shown in the photographs has been built, but those who wish can already order the exact same car for themselves and receive it next fall. The restomod is based on a more or less live Ford Mustang in a fastback body of 1967-1968 model years, it is completely disassembled, the body undergoes a thorough restoration, and then receives a new technical stuffing. The stock engine gives way to a modern Coyote 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 that produces 466 hp. and 569 Nm, it is paired with a modern 10-speed Ford “automatic” (as an alternative, a 6-speed “mechanics” is offered). The new powertrain comes with a new stainless steel exhaust system with Borla mufflers.

The standard suspension is replaced by a Roadster Shop chassis with new independent front suspension, front anti-roll bar, new four-link rear suspension, new rear axle, Fox adjustable shock struts and rack and pinion steering. Classic design 17-inch forged wheels are shod with modern 255/45 ZR 17 Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 tires. The brakes are, of course, also new – 280mm Baer discs with four-piston calipers “in a circle”. For a surcharge, you can install a carbon-fiber crankshaft instead of aluminum, a sportier suspension and 18-inch wheels with tires of different widths front and rear.

Inside, the original dashboard is preserved, antique Procar seats, a Dakota microclimate control unit and a Retrosound Classic audio system with four Focal speakers and a subwoofer are installed. The upholstery of the door cards and the ceiling is completely new, there are power windows, their control knobs are stylized as “oars”. The steering column is adjustable. The new center tunnel features cupholders and USB ports.
