Erik ten Hag open to keeping Mason Greenwood but says Manchester United bosses have final say

Mason Greenwood has been training privately with the blessing of United to keep fit. any decision by the club regarding the future of the striker at Manchester United.

The United manager also revealed that he plans to speak with the Glazers about the property situation during the club's pre-season tour of the US.

United are expected to announce the results of their six-month internal investigation into Greenwood before the start of the new Premier League season in three weeks.

Ten Hag is believed to be ready to leave Greenwood after being asked for his opinion in an investigation that began in February after Crown Prosecution's Office announced charges of attempted rape, assault causing bodily harm and control and coercion against 21 -year-old striker were removed.

Greenwood has been suspended from United since January 2022 after he was first arrested by Greater Manchester Police. He has been training privately with United's blessing to keep fit and was recently spotted privately training at the community sports centre.

“It's the club's decision,” Ten Hag said when asked how he sees Greenwood's future. “Of course, I expressed my ideas and opinions, but this is the decision of the club. We all have to accept that.”

Asked if he would like to keep Greenwood, the United manager added: “I can’t say so much about it. But I say that I shared my opinion on this, so let's see what happens and what the solution will be.

Discussions about Greenwood began as United, who will take on Arsenal at New Jersey's Metlife Stadium on Saturday night, are looking for a new striker this summer. United are in talks with Atalanta about a deal for Danish striker Rasmus Høilund, who became their top target after Harry Kane's rejection of an offer, and are also in parallel talks over Eintracht Frankfurt's Randal Kolo Muani.

“We are doing everything in our power to find the right person,” said Ten Hag, who acknowledged that United should “raise the bar” next season. “We are working hard to do this because this is an area where we need to improve.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim Hamad bin Al Thani, who have bid for United, continue to wait for the Glazers to decide on the club's future. Ten Hag hopes to discuss the situation with the owners over the next 10 days.

“I communicate with them more often, so this is a good opportunity to share ideas and we can talk informally,” Ten Hag said when asked if he would like clarification from the owners on the takeover situation. “Obviously I can give advice and recommendations, but the decision is up to the club.” Meanwhile, Ten Hag admitted it would “naturally” Harry Maguire be disappointed by the loss of the captain's armband, but believes the England defender will continue to fight for his place despite uncertainty about his future. Bruno Fernandes, who succeeded Maguire as captain, said the armband came with a “great responsibility” and that receiving the honor was “beyond your expectations”.
