The new Mitsubishi L200 is completely declassified: permanent four-wheel drive is preserved!

The sixth-generation Mitsubishi L200 (aka Triton in some markets) mid-size pickup truck debuted in its manufacturing home of Thailand and has already arrived here for sale. The design of the pickup truck has not changed fundamentally with the change of generations, but many key components, including the frame, are new.

Mitsubishi has been publishing photos of camouflaged prototypes and teasers of the new L200/Triton since spring, and today a full-fledged premiere took place in Bangkok (the capital of Thailand). Thailand and Australia are key markets for the Mitsubishi L200, where it consistently makes the bestseller list, and in general the new pickup will be officially sold in more than a hundred countries around the world. The platform of the new L200 will form the basis of the next generations of Nissan Navara and Renault Alaskan pickups.

The “sixth” Mitsubishi L200 received a completely new steel frame with a 65% larger cross-sectional area. Frame bending stiffness increased by 40%, torsional stiffness – by 60%. The new generation pickup truck will be offered with a single, one-and-a-half and two-row cab to choose from, but the wheelbase for all versions is the same – 3130 mm (+130 mm compared to its predecessor). The overall length, depending on the version, varies from 5265 mm to 5360 mm, width – from 1795 to 1930 mm, height – from 1765 to 1815 mm. The loading height of the body has been reduced by 45 mm to 820 mm. The double wishbone front suspension has had its top-arm position moved up for 20mm more travel, while the rear still has a leaf-sprung solid axle that works alongside new, thicker shock absorbers. Fuel tank capacity – 75 l.

The new Mitsubishi L200 has only one engine – a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder 4N16 turbodiesel, but it has three levels of maximum output for different pickup versions: 110 kW (150 hp) and 330 Nm, 135 kW (184 hp) .s.) and 430 Nm, 150 kW (204 hp) and 470 Nm. Gearbox – 6-speed “mechanics” or 6-speed hydromechanical “automatic”. Drive – rear or full. Four-wheel drive, like its predecessor, can be of two types: classic part-time with “lower” Easy Select 4WD and permanent all-wheel drive Super Select 4WD-II with an asymmetric center self-locking differential (by default, 40% of the power is supplied to the front axle, 60 % to the rear) and “lower”.

On the Super Select 4WD-II system, the center differential can be forcibly locked or opened to make the pickup truck rear-wheel drive, in addition there are seven electronically controlled driving modes: Normal (standard), Eco (economical), Gravel (gravel), Snow (snow), Mud (mud), Sand (sand), Rock (stones). The rear cross-axle differential on all versions of the pickup truck is equipped with an imitation of blocking by brakes. In addition, the set of electronic driver assistants has been significantly expanded, up to adaptive speed control and the Active Yaw Control (AYC) system, which allows to reduce the turning radius by braking the inner front wheel.

The cab is more spacious, with front seat cushions positioned 20mm higher than its predecessor for better visibility. The design of the front panel and instrument panel is quite conservative, there are no touch buttons (except those on the screen of the multimedia system) – only physical and rather large ones, it is convenient to press them with work gloves. Four 600 ml bottles of water are placed in the box between the front seats.

In Thailand, prices for a sixth-generation pickup truck start at 699,000 baht (1.84 million rubles in current exchange rates). At the beginning of 2024, the Mitsubishi L200 will return to the Japanese market after a 12-year break.
