West Ham have made their first move in favor of Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse with a bid totaling around £25m.
The 28-year-old England international relegated with his club last season but is seen as a player who could fill a range of roles under David Moyes.
Moyes, the West Ham manager, has eyed a host of defensive midfielders, including Denis Zakaria , Joao Paligna and Scott McTominay, and while Ward-Prowse can play in that position, he could add competition in the advanced zones.
Ward-Prowse has three years left on his contract at Southampton but is expected to move this summer, with new manager Russell Martin building a squad for a league promotion bid.
He has been with Southampton throughout his career and spent 11 seasons in the Premier League with them before they were relegated last season. Clubs had their eyes on him before he signed a new deal with St. Mary's in 2021.
Moyes has to oversee a midfield rebuild as Declan Rice has joined Arsenal on a £105m deal for the English player.
West Ham have appointed Tim Steidten as technical director and have braced themselves for a busy summer transfer business as it was decided that Rice would leave the club. Michael Antonio has also been the subject of serious interest from Saudi Arabia.
They will have another season in European football after winning the European Conference as Premier League form suffered last season and the club struggle with relegation in parts of the campaign.
Angelo Ogbonna has agreed a new one-year contract and will be part of the squad next season, while Wolves' bids for Aaron Cresswell have been rejected as they consider left-backs. Ward-Prowse has been a longtime target and has the added benefit of being a homegrown player.
West Ham are also linked with a £40m move for Conor Gallagher from Chelsea, but Tottenham are clearly the more likely destination.
