Mullin suffered a punctured lung following an ax hit by Bishop 12 minutes into Wrexham's 3-1 win over United Under 21s at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego and could now miss the start of the new League Two season.

Bishop's challenge prompted a furious reaction from Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson, who suggested that the 23-year-old goalkeeper would be better off bypassing their dressing room, a remark that angered United.

But Foster, Wrexham and the former United goalkeeper, heard how Bishop was devastated by the incident, went to console him and give Mullin's number so the goalkeeper could send a message of apology.

“I'm so sorry Nathan. , he's absolutely heartbroken,” Foster said. “I gave Paul's number to Nathan so he could contact him, but yes, he's completely gutted. I sympathize with this guy.”

    Hit the injury to Main

It should have been a big night for Cobby Mainu, who was selected early Thursday against Real Madrid at NRG Stadium in Houston, ahead of much more experienced midfielders, just days after an impressive victory over Arsenal. However, Mainu's evening was brutally cut short just four minutes later when Rodrigo knocked him out after a foul by Casemiro forced the Real Madrid player to face United's rising youth talent. was in treatment for the time before being hobbled and comforted by Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti when he returned to the dressing room. Mainu was later depicted leaving the NRG on crutches with his left leg in a safety boot.

United manager Erik ten Hag said they would have to wait for further test results before determining the severity of the injury. But an extended period would deal a serious blow to the player and could also potentially complicate Ten Hag's transfer plans.

United want to sell Fred and Donny van de Beek and are willing to listen to offers for Scott McTominay if an acceptable offer comes up on the amid interest from West Ham. But Mainu's long-term injury could see Ten Haeg be against losing McTominay.

There were echoes of United's games against Crystal Palace and Melbourne Victory. at the MCG in Melbourne last summer when Maguire was also bullied. For now, Maguire, who is also interested in West Ham, remains a United player, but it's hard to believe that such a move is not in the interests of both the player and the club.

Maguire has been stripped of the captain's armband, is at the bottom of the list of central midfielders, and England manager Gareth Southgate has expressed concern about his lack of regular playing time for his club.

United and Real Madrid drew crowds of 67,801, short of the 72,000 spectators and slightly short of the 109,000 visitors the two clubs drew at Michigan's Big House in 2014. Initially, it looked like the NRG could only be two-thirds full, but it did start to fill up a lot more as the game progressed – although one can imagine it would have been a full house had the average ticket price not been a hefty $175. Even the cheapest tickets start at $80.

    Reporter's Error

Media companies covering United's US tour were given a Texan tour of Minute Maid Park, the spectacular home of the Houston Astros baseball team, on Wednesday. the city's sports leaders and organizers of the 2026 World Cup.

Dusty Baker Jr., the legendary 74-year-old coach of the Astros, was spotted talking to local baseball reporters while his players practiced ahead of a game tonight . against the Texas Rangers. However, what Baker didn't count on was that The Athletic United correspondent Laurie Whitwell accidentally tripped him up while he was walking around watching a workout. Nevertheless, Baker is such a gentleman that he apologized to Whitwell and checked to see if the burglar had hurt himself. What a guy.
