The Lionesses plan to 'do it for Kira' as Rachel Daly admits she is 'heartbroken' at Walsh's injury,
from Tom Harry
Rachel Daly says she breathed a sigh of relief when she heard the news that England teammate Kira Walsh hadn't torn her anterior cruciate ligament after «heartbreak» was broken when she saw Walsh's injury in their World Cup victory over Denmark.
And the Aston Villa striker has now urged the Lionesses to «do it for Kira» when they face China in Adelaide on Tuesday to secure a play-off spot in the tournament.
Walsh has been ruled out. Group D against Asian Cup champions, but the Football Association said on Saturday that the Barcelona star will remain at English World Cup base Terrigal to continue her recovery while further examination of her knee continues, so Walsh has not yet been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament .
«[It was] a sigh of relief, I guess, when it wasn't a scary three-letter word and we're all here just to support her and help her get through whatever she needs,» Daly said of Walsh. < /p> How to Fix an Injury Crisis Killing Women's Game
“At first, it was obviously heartbreaking. In such situations, you always fear the worst. She's such a key part of our team on and off the field, so it was tough. It's not nice to see someone get hurt.
“She is in a good mood. This is Kira in everything. She always has a smile on her face. She is on the team and by her side is obviously in the best place to recover and obviously we just support her in whatever she needs.»

Despite the blow of losing Walsh, the subject of a world record for women's transfer fees, when she moved from Manchester City to Barcelona for just over £400,000 in September 2022 to play against China, Daly says the team has strength in depth to continue the challenge of the World Cup.
«It's hard to lose a player with her abilities and the qualities she brings,» Daly added. “But that’s why Sarina [Wigman] built a team of 23 players and the depth that we have. Obviously something has to change [in XI], it's natural when we lose a player but, you know, it's a team game and we have to get through it and ultimately get the job done for Kira as well.
“I think what you saw on Friday [against Denmark after Walsh was taken] was our resilience. Obviously, it was very hard to lose her, but we have players who can take on this role.
“It will be difficult, but we know it and we have players who can interfere and ultimately it is a team game and not just one person. Obviously it's heartbreaking to see and not be able to play with us, but I think everyone just tuned in to her.» squad to seize the opportunity, Daly continued, “Absolutely. And yes, it's sad to see someone not being able to play, but it's a fantastic opportunity for someone else to shine. And yes. It's a team game and we'll have to see what Sarina puts out there. But everyone can intervene.
“There will be difficult moments and that is the nature of the World Cup tournament. Because the teams around us are getting better and better. We will have more chances against us, but we hope so. It's great for the game to see other teams grow and succeed. We've played two really tough matchups and we're moving on to the third so we're going to be testing and how we're handling that is the side of resilience that we're going to take in the next games. .”
England will qualify for the Round of 16 if they avoid defeat to China, and that also ensures the Lionesses top the group. This will prepare them for the Round of 16 meeting with the Group B runners-up in Brisbane next Monday 7th July.
While they have yet to concede a goal in the World Cup, on the other hand , Wigman's team only scored twice in the tournament and only once from open play. However, Daly says she's not bothered by this and seems confident that there will be more goals, adding: «No, it's not a problem. I think with two games in the tournament, two wins, you have to look at the positives.
“We have two really good wins against two really good teams. I think there is a lot of noise from the outside around goals scored, but inside it is not a problem. We need to get through and hopefully get better and better with every game.”
