A bright flashing “X” icon. The sign, which was installed at Twitter's headquarters in San Francisco, was taken down just a few days after it was put up.

City building inspectors said on Monday that they had received 24 complaints about unauthorized construction over the weekend. . Complaints included concerns about its structural safety and lighting.

The Elon Musk-owned company, which has been renamed X, removed the Twitter sign and the iconic bluebird logo from the building last week.

This work was temporarily suspended because the company did not have the necessary permits. For a while, the “er” at the end of “Twitter” remained inactive due to the abrupt halt in the dismantling of the sign.

The city has filed a complaint and launched an investigation into the giant “X” sign that was installed on Friday atop a building in the city center.

Although the X logo has replaced Twitter in many parts of the site and application, the remnants of Twitter remained.

Residents nearby have complained about the pulsating white light, which particularly affects those in high-rise buildings across from the headquarters. .

The San Francisco Building Inspection Department tried twice to inspect the logo, on Friday and again on Saturday, but officials denied access, saying the sign was temporary, according to the city's building complaint tracking mechanism.

Among the neighbors concerned about the new addition is Christopher Beal, who told CBS News: “It's hard to describe how bright he made the intersection.”

He said the stroboscopic light was “like a flash of lightning” and said he couldn't watch a movie in a room that overlooks the building even with the curtains drawn.

Patricia Wallinga, who also lives across the street from the sign, said she thought it was “lightning” or “a police siren.”

“I was very confused,” she said.

“This building is mostly rent regulated. A lot of older people live there, I'm sure, I'm absolutely sure it's dangerous, especially for them. It's such a clown show.”

This happened after police stopped workers removing the old logo from the side of the building, claiming they had not sealed the footpath to keep pedestrians safe.

Permission is required to replace letters and symbols to ensure “conformity with the historic character of the building,” Patrick Hannan, a spokesman for the Building Inspection Division, said earlier this week. and approval of the plan. The city is filing a complaint and is investigating.”

X will remain in San Francisco

The building was subject to a separate investigation in December over concerns that Musk built workers' bedrooms.

The rebrand is the latest major change since it bought Twitter last October for $44bn (£34.3bn). .

The 2011 lease expressly bans signage on rooftops and outdoors, with the exception of a “blade sign” that previously read “@twitter”, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.< /p>

Mr. Musk said the company will remain in San Francisco despite offers to relocate.

“Many offered X (formerly known as Twitter) big incentives to move their headquarters from San Francisco,” he wrote on X.

“Additionally, the city is in a doomed spiral with one company after another leaving or leaving. So they expect X to move too. We will not. You only know who your real friends are when the chips are down. San Francisco, beautiful San Francisco, although others will leave you, we will always be your friends,” he added.
