New York City has struggled to cope with an influx of more than 90,000 migrants from the US-Mexico border last year.

A recent influx brought back New York hotels after the pandemic. More than 100 hotels have signed contracts with the city for about 10,000 rooms.

But the city currently lacks space to accommodate people, Mr. Adams said.

The Democrat Mayor said he wants to “localize” the “madness” by restricting places where people sleep outdoors to certain parts city.

He added: “I can assure you that this city will not be like other cities where there are tents on every street.”

The city has already brought hundreds of asylum seekers to buses to other parts of the state, including the capital Albany.

The Legal Aid Society and the Homeless Coalition criticized the mayor's handling of the crisis.

Groups said allowing migrants to sleep outside was “heartbreaking and maddening.”

newcomers and forcing people to languish on local streets is cruel and contrary to a range of court rulings and local laws,” the groups said in a joint statement.

Mr. Adams, for his part, has slammed the Biden administration's handling of the US border crisis, where daily illegal crossings hit a record 10,000 earlier this year.

Speaking Monday from City Hall, Mr. Adams said he was focusing on his impact on New York.

The mayor has repeatedly called for federal changes to give newcomers to New York the right to work .

Other Democratic lawmakers in the City also criticized Joe Biden, President of America, during a rally in City Hall Park on Monday.

Jenifer Rajkumar, Assemblyman from Queens, said: “ We need this crisis to be managed by the president.

“Immigration is controlled at the federal level. We need a president to inject smart solutions into our overburdened system.”
