Toyota is not going to part with the classic frame SUV Land Cruiser 70 and once again upgraded it, while the design became more old-fashioned.
Last night, Toyota introduced the long-awaited new Land Cruiser Prado, and with it the updated classic Land Cruiser 70 suddenly debuted. I did not expect two premieres on the same day.
The Toyota Land Cruiser 70 has been in production since 1984 and is still sold in Australia, South Africa and the Middle East. The Land Cruiser 70 survived the first restyling in 2007, the designers then decided to make its appearance more modern, in the spirit of the Land Cruiser of the J100 generation, and now there has been a rollback to the classic decor, because the “seventy” is no longer embarrassed by its old-fashionedness, but is proud of it.< br />
Round headlights returned to the Land Cruiser 70, but with a modern LED filling, and the turn signals are now “bumps” on a narrowed front end, emphasizing the relief of the front wheel arches. The leading edge of the hood has become higher, and the hood itself is more angular. The new, more concise, chrome-free grille now features a large Toyota lettering instead of a branded emblem. The front bumper has also become more angular and, as it were, visually separated from the body. Exterior mirrors on the 5-door station wagon have become larger. The main changes except for the lights completely moved from the wings to the bumper, while the cutouts for them in the wings remained, these cutouts are covered with plugs in body color.

The previous major technical update for the Land Cruiser 70 happened in 2016: then it received a reinforced frame, additional airbags, seat belt pretensioners, a stabilization system, an uphill starting assistant, cruise control, an upgraded Euro 5 V8 turbodiesel and a number of other minor improvements. . Last fall, the Land Cruiser 70 for the Australian market got an automatic emergency braking system, and now the list of electronic driver assistants has been added to the line-of-sight system, the speed limit sign recognition system and the automatic headlight switching system from high to low.
The main technical innovation is a 2.8-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel (204 hp, 500 Nm) paired with a 6-speed hydromechanical automatic transmission. The old power unit remains in service — a 4.5-liter V8 turbodiesel (205 hp, 430 Nm) paired with a 5-speed «mechanics». The drive in both cases is only full, part-time type, with a rigidly connected front axle and a reduction gear in the transfer case. The center tunnel design has been redesigned for the automatic transmission selector, but the old-fashioned transfer case control lever has remained in place.

Other innovations in the cabin are a more convenient multifunctional three-spoke steering wheel instead of the previous four-spoke steering wheel, a new emphatically old-fashioned-looking instrument panel with a 4.2-inch color on-board computer screen on the right side and a new multimedia system with a 6.7-inch screen instead of the previous 6, 1-inch (supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto). On the center console, in addition, there are new service keys and two USB ports, but the microclimate control unit is the same — an archaic slider type.

Toyota Land Cruiser 70 is produced in Japan, but in it has not been sold in its homeland for a long time.
