The German company is preparing for the presentation of the concept of the future van for road trip fans: a couple of California sketches have been published so far.
The German manufacturer introduced the Multivan T7 passenger minibus in June 2021. In Europe, this commercial model has undergone several modifications over the past time, but a camper has not yet appeared among them. Now, Volkswagen has officially announced a future novelty: the production version of the next generation VW California will be on the assembly line of the Hannover plant in 2024.

In the near future, the novelty will debut in the status of a pre-production concept with a plug-in hybrid «stuffing». The company said that the Volkswagen California show car will be presented as part of the international exhibition of motorhomes, vans and caravanning Caravan, which will be held in Dusseldorf from August 25 to September 3.
By the way, the German manufacturer decided to time the presentation of the novelty harbinger to the 35th anniversary of the camper: the first T3-based California made its debut at the same Caravan exhibition in 1988. Over the past years, the company has sold a total of about 260 thousand California campers, of which 175 thousand copies (that is, 67%) were sold between 2019 and 2023.

So far, the Germans have shown a couple of official sketches of the concept camper. The model will be based on the Multivan T7 body with an extended wheelbase (its length is 5173 mm). The sketch shows a lifting roof, which allows you to organize a sleeping place with «windows», as well as an awning that can be stretched to both sides of the sidewalls of the body.
On another version of the sketch, a control element is also added camper VW California, located in the cabin. This is a portable touch pad that allows users to adjust the temperature, lighting and control a number of other vehicle functions. It is expected that the concept will be equipped with a kitchenette, a dining area and a modular bed.

It is known that the new Volkswagen California camper will be a plug-in hybrid. Details about the installation in the company have not yet been declassified. Recall that the «donor» Multivan T7 is equipped with an eHybrid hybrid system, it is based on a 1.4-liter TSI gasoline turbo engine, working in tandem with a 116-horsepower electric motor; the composition also includes a battery with a capacity of 10.4 kWh. The total power of the installation is 218 hp. >In the future, a modification of the camper will be created based on ID.Buzz; the proposed name is ID.California. Such a motorhome will have a fully electric “stuffing”, according to preliminary data, it will receive a traction battery with a solid capacity of 111 kWh. The company is likely to introduce such a camper in the second half of this decade.
