Mr Anderson replied: 'Listen Nigel, I'm not going to sit here and make excuses to anyone. It's getting out of control, we're in power now, I'm the vice chairman of the Conservative Party, we're in government and we've failed at that. There is no doubt about it.

“We said we'll fix it, it's a failure.

“We have rules and I know it's hard for the British public at the moment to understand what we're trying to do with flights to Rwanda and changes to the law , a bill on illegal migration, and it seems very slow.

“We are ready. against that Nigel, let's be honest. We have left-wing lawyers, we have human rights activists, we have charitable foundations.

“Everyone is against us, but I don’t make excuses. It slows us down. If the whole parliament would support us in this, I'm sure it would have already been passed.”

Mr Jenrick was asked during an interview on Times Radio on Wednesday morning if he agreed with Mr Anderson that the Tories “failed” on immigration.

He also pointed to the deployment of “more rudimentary forms of decent but not luxurious accommodation” for asylum seekers, including the Bibby Stockholm barge, as a measure that would “reduce pull factors to the UK”.
