Rishi Sunak is unwilling to defend workers whose work is at risk of being automated by artificial intelligence (AI) because he is a «tech bro» who is «in bed» with Silicon Valley, said the Labor party secretary for shadow culture.
Lucy Powell keeps briefing for digital, culture, media and sports at the forefront of the Labor bench, although Whitehall was reorganized in February to separate culture and digital into two separate departments.
Speaking to The Telegraph about Labor's approach to AI, she derided Mr. Sunak as a «techie» who fails to properly regulate the sector because his experience of studying and working in California made him too close to Silicon Valley.
< p> «He is not in a position to take on some vested interests,» she said. «It's very similar to the tech world.
«I think if you're totally in bed with the few and the sector of tech brethren, then you can't really act on behalf of the many.»
< p>She argued that Mr. Sunak's involvement in the technology sector may have ulterior motives.
«People have been telling me, 'It just feels like he's kind of devising a plan B for himself in California if and when he loses the next election,'» she said.
Labor's AI plan
Ms Powell said that if Labor gets into government, they will consider regulating large AI models, including the data they are trained on.
This comes amid concerns that the work of artists, writers, musicians and news organizations is being effectively plagiarized by AI platforms.
Ms Powell said Labor is considering a «licensing model» as well as «markers or other secure watermarks» for AI-generated content.
«You have these deliberate attempts to rob the copyrights of people, their creative effort,” she said. «We need to take this into account now before it's too late.»
She also criticized the government for failing to address AI-generated misinformation in the Internet security bill.
However, Labor also faced questions about disinformation after two party MPs, Carl Turner and Bill Esterson, shared a fake photo of Sunak drinking a pint of beer.
Responding to a question about the controversy , Ms. Powell said: «Examples like this just show how easy it is for all of us to be misled, deceived, or mistaken for one thing when it's actually something else.»

«And if so, skip the annual Eton and Harrow matches and you'll get yourself a seat.»
She added: «The tradition of the sport, especially a game like cricket, is really important But the tradition of elitism is not something you want to keep.”
“Positive Discrimination”
Referring to the Independent Commission for Fairness in Cricket, which has highlighted racism, sexism and elitism in the English game, she said the role of «positive discrimination» in modernizing the sport.
She said: «You can't solve these issues of inclusivity, diversity, breaking down these elitist concepts and paths that we clearly have in cricket, you can't do that unless you have a really clear strategy. about how you're going to do it.
«Part of that includes sometimes some positive discrimination, whether it's against women wanting to play the game, whether it's a clear strategy and plan to support kids in public schools get access to the game.»
An ECB spokesman said: «The Women's Future Tour program now runs until 2025 with only a few other countries playing women's test matches, 2026 being the first opportunity to host the Women's test match at Lord& #39;s and we really want to do it.”
