Fleetwood's restaurant was destroyed by wildfires in Maui
Mick Fleetwood, drummer and co-founder of Fleetwood Mac, vowed to become «the defender » Hawaii after devastating wildfires destroyed his restaurant on the island of Maui.
The British musician said he would help draw attention to the devastation caused by the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century, which he described as «catastrophic» and «incredible shock for everyone.»
The 76-year-old was in Los Angeles when the fire broke out earlier this month. He rushed to Hawaii only to find that his restaurant Fleetwood's On Front St. was demolished just a few days before the staff was due to celebrate the establishment's 11th anniversary.
Fleetwood told Sky News he was lucky he didn't lose his home amid the «total devastation» on Maui, which he vowed to highlight. So far, 93 people have been confirmed dead in the deadly fire, but authorities expect the final death toll to be much higher. > Mick Fleetwood has a house in Maui. Lahaina is no more. That in itself is a statement that immediately leads you to the people who lived there,” he said.
“Selfishly, I didn’t lose a family member. I didn't lose my home. Yes, it could have happened, but it didn't… I was very lucky. Now what the hell can I do?
“The urgency is to find people. Responsiveness is communication and knowing who is here and who is safe.”
“What I can and do is to be protective, to say, 'Pay attention to what's happening.' In fact, it is much more useful than going downstairs and crying in Lahaina … I'm sure it will happen, but not now.”
Residents of Lahaina fear that the city will become a target for developers and wealthy outsiders. hoping to capitalize on its scorched earth, but Fleetwood said he would «waving the flag» against any such action.

Similarly, Fleetwood Mac star Stevie Nicks also posted on Instagram that «Lahaina hasn't left, she's just gone.»
The 75-year-old musician revealed: “My house and surrounding area did not burn down. The wind carried the fire away. It was all about the wind… The end result could have been very different.
“The Lahaina we knew, the Lahaina who had a lot to do with Fleetwood Mac and our music to the world, is gone. . But my memories of everything that happened to me there are clear as a bell.”
According to his official website, Fleetwood once owned four properties on Maui. In 2012, he moved his 95-year-old mother to the island to spend time with her until her death three years later.
