England's attempt to lift the Women's World Cup trophy failed as they lost 1-0 to Spain in the final in Sydney.

Aiming to become the first senior England team since the men's team in 1966 to win the World Cup, the Lionesses lost. away from Spain, and a 29th-minute goal from captain Olga Carmona proves the difference.

England goalkeeper Mary Earps gave hope to her team with a second-half penalty save, but the European champions failed to equalize.< /p>

Here's how Telegraph Sport rated the England and Spain players, and how Telegraph readers scored each player's goals.

    EnglandMary Earps – 8/10

It doesn't matter if she makes a copy of the shirt, one day they build a statue for her. The penalty save celebration was joyous, reminiscent of Stuart Pearce at Euro 96.
    Telegraph Reader Rating: 8.2

    Lucy Bronze – 6/10

Reminder before the next World Cup final: a dashing infield and vacating a position can end badly. Always more effective possession of the ball higher up the field, but when facing formidable opponents.
    Telegraph Reader Rating: 4.5

    Telegraph Reader Rating: 6.3

    Milli Bright – 6/10

Must have been during the first labors of she had the feeling that she was looking at a red wall. Too often she has had to play long and straight as her teammates hunt in vain for space.
    Telegraph Reader Rating: 5.6

    Alex Greenwood – 7/10

As well as her colleague in the center. -backs, there were fewer playthroughs to recreate the Rolls Royce experience from previous rounds. They fought to the end.
    Telegraph Reader Rating: 6.2

    Rachel Daly – 6/10

One of the players in the tournament. Looked likely to find a way with smart passing and movement. Had it not been for the injury, her halftime departure would have been unexpected.
    Telegraph Reader Rating: 5.7

    Keira Walsh – 6/10

The Spanish maestros backed themselves up to surround and minimize passing abilities. The forensic analysis of her sentencing decision was pathetic.
    Telegraph Reader Rating: 5.1

    Georgia Stanway – 6/10

Her hamstrings will need weeks of massage after she ran after the Spanish midfielders. It was clear from the beginning that the formation had abandoned her and Walsh was outnumbered.
    Telegraph Reader Rating: 5.3

    Ella Thun – 5/10

For obvious reasons, preferred Lauren James. She tried to assert her influence or demonstrate the confidence that made her the hero of the semi-finals.
    Telegraph Reader Rating: 4.6

    Lauren Hemp – 7/10

Her combinations with Daly were the highlight of the tournament. So close to doing better at hitting the bar after 15 minutes. The biggest threat. Unhappy.

It wasn't evening for an old-fashioned battering ram. Her substitution at half-time was heavy but correct as England needed to have a better hold on the ball.

    Subscriptions:

James for Russo; Kelly for Daly; England for Toone: England had to change to get ahead, but Spain was able to resist.

    SpainCata Coll – 7/10

Not always convincing with the small amount of action she needed to make, but overall well defended and needed to turn James down as England briefly pressured them to chase the equalizer.

    Ona Batlle – 8/10

Great cornerback who would have been happy to see Daly go at half-time. Enjoyed her one on one with Cannabis and was very defensive.

    Irene Paredes – 8/10

A serious centre-back thumped Hemp in the first 30 seconds to show that the Spanish entertainers are not averse to an early cut. Seeing Rousseau at half-time was an early victory.

    Laya Kodina – 7/10

After being almost nothing to do for 54 minutes, she indulged in an impressive game to make herself known to Hemp – a classic of the trauma simulation genre. Strong night, otherwise.

    Olga Carmona – 9/10

The inspiring Spain skipper scored a stunning goal and excelled in taking on the responsibility of showing how the biggest games bring the most out of the best players. Difference.

A sustained influence in midfield as England suffered in the centre. Supported Spain with smart passes from close range. Never put your foot wrong.

    Aitana Bonmati – 8/10

One of only three Spanish playmakers to monopolize possession in the first half. England could not approach her for a long period.

    Jennifer Hermoso – 7/10

Need to work on how to put the ball in the penalty and even more on how to take the penalty. Her miss gave England hope.

    Marion Kaldenti – 7/10

Constantly dueling with Walsh. England tried but failed to deprive herself of space and was eventually forced to abandon this policy and send more bodies ahead.

    Alba Redondo – 6/10

Subbed out for Hernandez before the hour as Spain reacted to Sarina Wigman's changes, showing how things changed slightly in the second half.

    Salma Paralluelo – 7/10

Selected to manage England's defence. Hit the post in the last minute of the first half, but had to be sent off with two yellow cards.

    Sub:

Hernandez for Redondo; Andres for Kodina; Putellas instead of Caldentey

Reserve Spaniards did a good job, especially in the added 13 minutes
