Everton have been circling around a hole in the hole for the past two years and somehow managed to break free when all seemed lost.
Could this be it? the season when the yearly ineptitude finally overtakes them? and ends with relegation to the Championship?
After only two games and two defeats, it is inevitable that Everton will face another horror film of the season.
They were the second lowest scoring record in the Premier League last season and although they are closing in on a £15m win over Southampton striker Che Adams, it was the poor goals conceded here that seriously bothered Sean Dyche.
Everton were so far behind Aston Villa in every aspect that it was almost embarrassing, and many of their traveling fans rushed out long before the fourth goal. Michael Keane, in particular, had a very hard day.
Any hope Dyche could have had of his players discovering some momentum after last season's dramatic showdown is gone.
Everton were booed at the end of every half and it's a familiar soundtrack from the past season.

Dyche said: “We were far from it. It wasn't good enough, it was far from what we wanted and the consistency we needed.
“Too many mistakes are penalized, but overall I won't make excuses, they were much better. than we. We were lethargic and there was no body language to protect us.

While Everton behaved horribly, Villa were irresistible with a record signing of Moussa Diaby in the forefront of excellent team play. .
Diaby is a £43m Bayer Leverkusen recruit who is fast developing and already making a quick impression and it was a great performance on his home debut with Leon Bailey and John McGinn who are also excellent.

Emery has signed with the French international as he can play in many attacking positions, but what always remains the same is his ability to unsettle defenders.
At the start of an important week for Villa when the club celebrates its return on Wednesday, Diaby, for the first time in 13 years in European football, hinted at the coming excitement.
At one point near the end of the half, a deft attacking move ended with Diaby shooting from the summer on goal, and only an outstanding save by Jordan Pickford prevented him.
The only thing missing from Diaby's performance was Goal, but Everton were still pushed back by John McGinn, a Douglas Louis penalty and close range shots from Bayley and substitute John Durand.
It was a perfect response to last weekend's Newcastle debacle, including an injury to captain Tyrone Mings at the end of the season.
Villa have won eight home games in a row without conceding a single field goal.

Everton's problems were exacerbated when striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin was sent off seven minutes before half-time. He was clearly struggling with blurred vision after an early collision with Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and was unable to continue. Alex Iwobi was also substituted early in the second half with a hamstring injury.
Villa kept the situation under control, and a third goal by Bayley, punishing Keane's mistake, sparked an exodus of Everton fans who had seen enough.
Coming on as a substitute, Duran scored the fourth after a terrible shot by Ashley Young and a misguided shot by Keane.
Brighter days ahead for Villa, but it looks like another tumultuous season for Everton.
