The MIMS 2023 exhibition is mainly dedicated to automotive components, but the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad decided to use this platform to acquaint the public with mastered in this new year. The compact crossovers Kaiyi X3 and Kaiyi X3 Pro were shown to a wide audience for the first time.
Kaiyi became the first Chinese brand that allowed Avtotor to restart production earlier this year after a long pause due to well-known geopolitical events. Then, during the year, BAIC, SWM and JMC models became Kaiyi's neighbors on Avtotor, and the plant first spoke about working with JMC only last week — there were no new products from this brand at MIMS 2023, they will be presented separately next fall, then the long-awaited details will appear on the production of Foton electric trucks at Avtotor. The photo of the impersonal Naveco C500 truck, which accidentally got into a press release about the start of Avtotor's work with JMC, has not yet been commented on by representatives of the plant.

This year, Avtotor wants to produce and sell through subsidiaries and partners 70,000 vehicles (of which 2,000 are commercial vehicles), the plan for next year is at least 1,000,000 vehicles. For each of the mastered models, the plant plans to gradually increase the depth of localization. At a press conference, one of his colleagues asked Evgeny Petukhov, General Director of Avtotor, a reasonable question: how is the plant going to combine the increase in the depth of localization with the rapid pace of updating the model ranges of Chinese partners? For example, just a couple of weeks ago, Avtotor mastered the production of the BAIC BJ40 frame SUV, and today the second generation of this model debuted in China. Restylings for Chinese models can generally occur every year. Evgeny Petukhov said that the plant will have to find the optimal balance between the depth of localization and the speed of updating models. How this will look in practice, time will tell.

The first Kaiyi model localized at the Kaliningrad plant was the E5 sedan, and in the near future Kaiyi dealers (by the way, there are already 78 of them in Russia) will have X3 and X3 Pro crossovers. In terms of bodywork, layout and core technical solutions, the Kaiyi X3 and Kaiyi X3 Pro are one model made from Chery Tiggo 4, but the firmware differs from the regular X3 with a sportier appearance and more refined interior design, so from the consumer’s point of view they are rather different models. Recall that the company Yibin Kaiyi (Cowin) Automobile is 49% owned by Chery, the hardware unification of the Kaiyi and Chery models is very high, but Kaiyi has its own design and its own development strategy.

The dimensions of Kaiyi X3 and Kaiyi X3 Pro are the same: length — 4400 mm, width — 1831 mm, height — 1653 mm, wheelbase — 2632 mm, ground clearance — 158 mm. Kaiyi X3 is equipped with a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol (113 hp) paired with a 5-speed «mechanics» or a CVT, and Kaiyi X3 Pro is equipped with a more powerful turbo engine of the same volume (147 hp) paired with variator. The drive for both crossovers is only front, the rear suspension is semi-independent with a transverse torsion beam. Curiously, the Kaiyi X3 Pro engine is completely covered with a plastic shield, which allegedly reduces the noise level. The Kaiyi X3 Pro also has richer equipment, we will tell you about it in the coming weeks, when the prices become known. mm and a wheelbase of 2820 mm, its Russian premiere is expected in the coming months.
