Kia Sportage has a battery alternative: the serial EV5 crossover is presented

China will be the first market for the new SUV, orders are already open there. Later, the model will reach other countries.

At the motor show that opened today, August 25, in Chengdu, China, the world premiere of the serial Kia EV5 electric crossover, the harbinger of which was presented last spring, took place. The production of the new SUV will be launched in the Celestial Empire, but the model will not become a local exclusive: it will be supplied to other countries, including Korea, which is native to the brand. By the way, Kia itself has not yet disclosed the characteristics of the novelty, focusing on design, but the main inputs are already known, because a couple of weeks ago the SUV appeared in the database of the Ministry of Industry of China.

Externally, the marketable EV5 as a whole repeated the concept of the same name, except that they changed the «beam» on the front bumper, instead of cameras, they installed the usual mirrors and now there are flip-out handles on the doors. Other exterior features include intricately shaped headlights, L-shaped taillights and large wheels.

The electric car is based on the E-GMP platform with an 800-volt electrical system. At the same time, in terms of its dimensions, the Kia EV5 is not far from the long-wheelbase Kia Sportage: the length of the “five” (in Chinese specifications) is 4615 mm, the width is 1875 mm, the height is 1715 mm, the distance between the axles is 2750 mm.

In the five-seat cabin, there is a scoreboard that has long been familiar to Kia, that is, a virtual tidy and a multimedia system screen hidden under a single glass. There are a number of touch buttons above the central air vents, but physical keys are also placed below. There is a floating section between the front seats with wireless charging and cup holders.

For China yet only the rear-wheel drive version with a 218 hp electric motor is certified. (310 Nm), the cross is equipped with a lithium-iron-phosphate battery (capacity not yet indicated). Other countries may have their own lineup.

More details about the Kia EV5 global crossover are promised to be revealed in October. Meanwhile, orders are already being taken in China, with preliminary prices ranging from $22,000 to $31,500. Curiously, the «traditional» locally assembled Kia Sportage is more expensive — from $ 24,600. Well, an imported Kia EV6 electric SUV will cost at least $38,800 there.
