Sportec Sub1000: a very light restomod based on the classic Porsche 911

Swiss company Sportec unveiled a purist restomod based on the Porsche 911 G-series coupe that was produced between 1973 and 1989: its the curb weight is only 990 kg, more than 200 kg less than the stock version of the model.

Modern Porsche sports cars weigh quite a lot: for example, the curb weight of the standard Porsche 911 GT3 of the 992 generation is 1418 kg, and the lightest Porsche 911 S/T in the range weighs 1380 kg. The Porsche 911 G series was also not the lightest car of its time: none of the factory versions weighed less than a ton, and the 3.2-liter coupe, which Sportec took as the basis for its restomod, weighed 1210 kg in stock, so that the Swiss had to work hard to lose two centners from it, this task is reflected in the name of the project – Sub1000, which means “less than 1000” in Russian.

Recall that Sportec, founded in 1997 by the racer and entrepreneur Gregor Burkard, is well known in the world of tuning, but today it is not only a tuning studio, but also a racing team and a manufacturer of high-quality restomods. Last fall, Sportec introduced the Project Ferdinand small-scale coupe based on the Porsche 964, and now the Sub1000 project has been completed and is ready to offer it to everyone.

In order to achieve a curb weight of less than a ton, the original body of the classic sports car had to be severely cut and thrown out of everything superfluous, including soundproofing, rear seats and the lion's share of interior trim. The skeleton of the body, of course, is completely restored and strengthened. The cabin is equipped with a semi-safety frame, most of the outer panels are made of carbon fiber, the wings are slightly expanded for the upgraded chassis. The original lighting has been replaced with modern LED lighting.

The front panel and seat frames are made of carbon fiber. The glass thickness has been reduced, the rear side windows are made of polycarbonate. There is no air conditioning and audio system, a battery mass switch has been added to the simplified microclimate unit.

The original boxer “six” has been comprehensively modernized: in particular, the working volume has been increased from 3.2 to 3.4 liters, the cooling system has been improved, a lightweight flywheel, new pistons and connecting rods have been installed, and the maximum speed has been increased. Maximum return – 270 hp and 340 Nm (there were 231 hp and 284 Nm in stock), in the future Sportec wants to squeeze more than 300 hp out of the old “aspirated” with the help of additional modifications. All power is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox and a self-locking differential. The lightweight exhaust system with rich sound is, of course, also completely new. The fuel tank capacity is 40 liters.

The suspension has been completely updated and tuned by Swiss rider Marcel Fessler: MCS 3W adjustable shock absorbers with external reservoirs, carbon fiber strut braces and powerful perforated Sportec disc brakes are installed. Modern lightweight forged wheels are stylized as classic ones.

Sportec does not name the price of the Sub1000 restomod, but only informs that each copy will be purely individual, made in collaboration with the customer. Typically, the price of such restomods is hundreds of thousands of euros, or in this case hundreds of thousands of Swiss francs.
