Manchester United struggled to find a solution Sofian Amrabat's overdue loan deal with Fiorentina will come to an end on Wednesday night as Erik ten Hag seeks reinforcements for his injured team.
Fiorentina would rather sell Amrabat than loan him out given he only has a year left on his contract, albeit with an option for a further 12 months, and values the Moroccan midfielder at around £30m.
But with United operating within tight limits due to UEFA's financial soundness rules, a permanent deal seems unlikely.
This left United hoping to reach a loan deal, but Fiorentina rejected their initial offer, which reportedly included a break clause effective in January that would have guaranteed the Italian club only about 1 million euros for the first half of the season.
Amrabat, who was born in the Netherlands and played under Ten Hag in Utrecht, was part of the Moroccan side that reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar last December, while Fiorentina beat West Ham last December. Europa League conference final in June.
Ten Hag lost Mason Mount for six weeks with a hamstring injury and fellow midfielder Cobbie Mainu is also not expected until October and the coach needs a midfielder who can help provide more control over the situation.
United will do their best. This summer, Fenerbahce goalkeeper Altay Bayindir will be their fourth £183m purchase after Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Høilund.
But with the club also looking to sign left-back Mark Cucurella on a loan from Chelsea and Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malasia are injured, money is tight given United's familiar attempts to raise significant funds through sales .

Dean Henderson joined Crystal Palace for a package worth around £20m but even with the sale of the goalkeeper to United this summer still raised less than £60m, including extras.
United are still trying to get rid of more players and Galatasaray have turned to outcast midfielder Donny van de Beek, who has also generated some interest from Lorient.
