McIlroy was held back by his European teammate Shane Lowry
Rory McIlroy warned Team USA that his heated dispute with Patrick Cantlay's caddy, who later led to the world number two barking expletives and being detained in the car park, «providing fuel for the fire» on Sunday's final day of the 44th Ryder Cup.
Cantlay final. A hole-in-one victory in the final match of a dramatic day by four gave the visitors a lifeline as they cut Europe's lead to 10½-5½ with 12 singles points remaining. But as exciting as the action was in that final hour on the course, it was the hot spots on the 18th green and outside the clubhouse that would later enter the Ryder Cup hall of shame.
What happened between McIlroy and caddy Cantlay?
With the final match of the second day all set for the final hole, Cantlay drained a 15-foot putt for birdie. The American players on the greenside celebrated wildly, although McIlroy and his playing partner Matt Fitzpatrick still had birdie putts of their own to make.
Joe LaCava, Cantlay's caddy but better known as Tiger Woods' longtime player, also joined in the celebration, but clearly angered McIlroy. There was also speculation that LaCava had stepped on McIlroy's line, meaning he stood between McIlroy's ball and the hole, which is considered bad etiquette.
McIlroy is close to Woods and will also be friends with LaCava. McIlroy's caddie, Harry Diamond, apparently asked LaCava to hold off on celebrating as his boss judged his putt, but the 68-year-old from Connecticut continued.
McIlroy and LaCava exchanged words with others in both. environment continuing the dispute. “The scenes on Channel 18 tomorrow will only add fuel to the fire,” McIlroy said afterwards.

McIlroy and Fitzpatrick missed their birdie putts, meaning Cantlay and Wyndham Clarke won the match by 1. The tension appeared to have subsided, but videos circulating on social media show McIlroy angry as he gets into his car to leave Marco Simone Golf and Country Club. He pointed and appeared to rush toward LaCava, shouting, “This can’t happen, this can’t happen. It's a fucking shame.”
McIlroy's teammate Shane Lowry was on hand to push the Northern Irishman into the car, as was his usual security. Jim «Bones» McKay, Justin Thomas' caddy, was also on the scene, trying to act as a peacemaker.

It was revealed on Sunday morning that Joe LaCava had texted Rory McIlroy apologizing for his behavior on the 18th green .
US broadcaster NBC quoted sources close to the US camp as referring to the report, although both Ryder Cup captains said any discussions between the teams would be held privately.
Any warnings about etiquette between players and caddies on the green are a locker room matter, the source said, dismissing the prospect of Ryder Cup authorities getting involved.
Why are people waving their caps at the green? Ryder Cup?
On Saturday morning there were allegations that Cantlay had decided not to wear a cap during the event in protest of Ryder Cup players not being paid to take part.
Cantlay denied this in the press. conference after the game, saying he didn't wear the hat because «it didn't fit.» However, it was not before it became the main theme of the European fans' chants throughout the day, with the galleries mockingly waving their hats at Cantlie during his four-ball match.
When Cantlay later hit his game-tying, match-winning putt on the 18th green, his U.S. teammates responded in kind, doffing their caps to the crowd of fans crowded around the final hole.

How did this happen? Has the golf world responded to the scandal?
Europe captain Luke Donald said he would speak to McIlroy about the incident on the 18th green and beyond. “Joe was waving his hat, obviously it was the fans waving their hats throughout the day, not our players,” Donald said. Referring to LaCava’s behavior on the 18th green, Donald added: “Rory asked Joe to step away.” , and he stood there for a while and started waving his hat, and Rory got upset. Rory is a passionate player, like all of us at this tournament. I'll talk to Rory about this later.
“I personally did not see the incident [in the parking lot]. I saw this on Channel 18. Yeah, I think we always try to play with passion, play with energy, but play with respect. That will certainly be my message to the players.»

US Captain Zach Johnson defended LaCava, saying, “A holiday is a holiday. I think you have every right to celebrate such a big hit with your team, and that's exactly what I saw.
“I saw the passion and everything that is good about Ryder. The cup came out and as far as I know, from what I was told, it was sent out after the game, and so I was told everything was fine.»
On the NBC post-game show, analysts Brandel Chamblee and Paula McGinley was asked about the incident. McGinley's answer was simple. “I love it,” he said.
