The Video Assistant Referee system was once again the source of controversy at the weekend as a Liverpool goal was wrongly ruled out.
After the latest error, our football observers have given their views on how must be the future of the system.
Jason Burt: Officials are not competent enough to use this
I think we've reached the stage where Ware's use in the Premier League needs to be suspended. This causes too much anger and its implementation doesn't work. Former judge Mike Dean let the cat out of the bag when he admitted that he avoided calling Ware because he wanted to spare the judge, his «colleague» Anthony Taylor, «more grief.»
Unfortunately, Ware led to laziness , and officials are simply not competent enough to use it. They should all be properly retrained, and if they cannot do so, they should be replaced. There must be specialists in Varu. Semi-automatic offsides should be introduced, decisions should be more transparent and properly explained, and officials should be paid more to encourage higher standards.
Chris Bascombe: Get rid of it
Get rid of it in its current form. Ware does the opposite of what Howard Webb promised — he constantly interferes when he shouldn't and maliciously influences the actions of the players on the field. Just keep the goal line technology and implement automatic offsides once it's proven to work.
John Percy: It'll eliminate the instant moment of joy
My biggest problem with this? When I supported my club while traveling around the country, goal celebrations always meant the most to me. There is a real feeling of bedlam and elation when you lose yourself to celebrate a last minute winner or a 20 yard world champion.

Now there are delays after delays, and that momentary moment of joy disappears while the target is being «tested» by people hundreds of miles away in air-conditioned offices. To deprive a paying fan of this magical experience is simply terrible and a stain on the game.
Sam Dean: Get the best referees in England… before the Saudis do
The Premier League has improved immeasurably thanks to the influx of foreign talent to such an extent to the extent that it is now widely recognized as the best domestic competition in the world. Why didn't they do the same with the judges? The best players in the world can come to England, so why not offer the same opportunity to the best referees?

Of course, misinterpreting the rules in a chaotic sport can cause problems. So take Ware off for anything other than crossing the lines and being offside. Retrospectively punish diving and unseen aggressive behavior with a multi-match ban. And make complaining about judicial errors as socially unacceptable as talking about money or sex at a dinner party.
