Scottish electric vehicle startup Munro Vehicles has significantly changed the design and technical characteristics of its debut model — now it is called not MK_1, but Series-M , the number of body styles has been increased to three: SUV, pickup truck and chassis with cab.
The Munro Vehicles startup was founded in 2019 by young entrepreneurs Russell Peterson and Ross Anderson. Last December, the Munro MK_1 electric SUV with a square-nest design from Ross Compton, who previously collaborated with American startups Bollinger Motors and Atlis Motor Vehicles, premiered. At the time of its debut, the Munro MK_1 design was presented as final, but Bollinger Motors soon accused Munro Vehicles of stealing the car's design. In fact, there was no theft, but the general author’s style of Ross Compton, and Bollinger froze the project of its SUV until better times. How the conflict ended is unknown, there is no official information on this topic, but we are not surprised that Munro Vehicles eventually asked Compton to change the design of the MK_1 — the updated model is presented today under the new name Munro Series-M.
A press release from Munro Vehicles said that the design of the vehicle was changed after consultation with the first customers, and at the same time some improvements were made to the design. The concept and layout have not changed fundamentally: Munro Series-M is addressed to mining and construction enterprises, rescue services, the military, farmers and lovers of outdoor recreation, it contains a large margin of safety (design life — 50 years) and the possibility of endless modernization.
The Munro Series-M is based on a powerful, proprietary steel frame and the body is made from aluminum. The Munro MK_1 had a pickup version with a double-row cab in May last year; it has been retained in the Munro Series-M, and there will also be a chassis with a single-row cab — this version can be equipped with various add-ons. The dimensions of the pickup truck and SUV are the same: length — 4590 mm, width — 1812 mm, height — 2010 mm, wheelbase — 3255 mm. Ground clearance — 480 mm, approach angle — 84 degrees, departure angle — 51 degrees, fording depth — 800 mm. Curb weight — 2450 kg, load capacity — 1050 kg, permissible towed trailer weight — 2250 or 3500 kg, depending on modification.
Munro Series-M is equipped with a single Turntide electric motor with axial magnetic flux, its maximum output on the M170 version is 170 kW (231 hp) and 600 Nm, on the M280 version — 280 kW (381 hp) and 700 Nm. The electric motor is located in the depths of the central tunnel and docked to a 2-speed transfer case, and then the power is transmitted to all wheels through a classic all-wheel drive system with three differentials (locks are available for all). Both axles are dependent, with spring suspension.
The battery is now the same for all versions — a 400-volt lithium-iron-phosphate with a capacity of 85 kWh (Munro MK_1 had a nickel-manganese-cobalt capacity of no more than 82.4 kWh), the range on a single charge has increased to 322 km (previously it was no more than 305 km), the maximum charging power has increased from 70-94 kW to 130 kW, full charging at maximum power takes only 30 minutes. The M170 version accelerates to 100 km/h in 9.2 s, the M280 version in 6 s, the maximum speed is 128 km/h and 153 km/h, respectively.
Munro, unfortunately, did not show the interior of the updated model, but they also announced a lot of new things: airbags, an adjustable steering column, more comfortable seats with an expanded range of adjustments, and a multimedia system with a 9-inch screen. Standard equipment now includes ABS, stability control, rollover protection, cruise control and a heat pump that improves energy efficiency. The trunk volume of the SUV is 1600 liters.
Externally, the Munro Series-M differs from the Munro MK_1 by a more sloping hood: there are no more luggage lockers on the sides of the front end, but visibility has improved. Due to the new embossed front fenders, the Munro Series-M slightly resembles the Soviet GAZ-69, the headlights are combined with air ducts, there is no radiator grille design — there is just a fine mesh.
Munro M170 costs from £75,995, Munro M280 from £89,995. For an additional fee, left-hand drive, air suspension, leather or sports seats, additional underbody protection, additional lighting, an expeditionary trunk and other options are available. Deliveries of Munro Series-M orders to customers should begin in the middle of next year, and Munro Vehicles intends to produce no more than 2,500 vehicles per year.
