Jurgen Klopp demands Tottenham-Liverpool replay, but Premier League firmly believes in result

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wants the Premier League to repeat his team's defeat to Tottenham Hotspur to correct the error that saw Luis Diaz's goal disallowed.

In a significant escalation in the Vara row, Klopp said he, as a «football man», had concluded that this was the fairest outcome to correct what he called an «unprecedented» mistake.

Telegraph Sport understands the Premier League is determined to resist Klopp's callsThe Merseyside club's general counsel and director of football administration and governance Jonathan Bamber is exploring the club's options ahead of its introduction to the Premier League. Legal advice will determine what steps are available to Fenway Sports Group owners. They recognize the obstacles the Premier League faces and public opinion is strongly opposed to the idea of a replay.

But at Klopp's press conference ahead of Thursday's Europa League clash with Union SG, the Liverpool boss showed he and his management are ready to fight. The club have lost the Premier League title by a single point twice in the last five years and believe the integrity of Saturday's result and possibly this year's title is at stake.

In a lengthy statement (see part below) Klopp said he had never seen such a mistake in his football career.

'The goal was scored. Legal. Fact.'

«The sound didn't change the situation at all because I wasn't really interested in why something happened because I knew,» Klopp said.

«I saw the result, I saw the goal we scored, and he has not changed.» doesn't count, so I didn't wait for the audio or sit there hoping to find out how this could have happened or anything like that.

“What I want to say is that as big as football is and as important as it is for us, we really treat it properly. I mean, all the people involved — the referee on the field, the linesman, the fourth official and especially now, in this case, the VAR — they didn't do it intentionally. We must not forget about this.

“Yes, it was an obvious mistake, and I think that solutions would have been found for it later. If not, I can say straight away, and probably some people don't want me to say this, not as a Liverpool manager, but rather as a footballer, I think the only result should be a replay. Just like that. This probably won't happen.

“The argument against it would probably be that if you open those gates, everyone will be asking for it. I think the situation is so unprecedented that this has never happened before, I'm 56 years old, I've been in football for 50 years and I'm absolutely used to it, even if I don't always deal with it well. wrong decision, difficult decisions — but as far as I remember, nothing like this has ever happened. That's why I think a redo would be the right decision.

“The next argument would be that if it happens again, I think a replay would be the right thing to do, or the referee would have the opportunity to get both coaches together and say, 'Sorry, we made a mistake. mistake, but we can figure it out.» that Liverpool will score a goal and we will go from there.»

“In this particular game, what makes it a little more special obviously is that we conceded two minutes after we scored a normal goal. How everything depends on each other, if another goal had been scored, we would have started from the center of the field, and not from where he started, everything would have been different. That's one thing. This is my take on it.

“Whether this (replay) will happen or not, I don’t know. It's my opinion. “Howard Webb said the process would be better. This is good. That would be a really good result, but it doesn't change the fact that something actually happened. By the way, what is the solution to this problem? We just say, “Okay, yeah, I see, we haven't had a penalty or four against us in the past and we haven't gotten a replay,” that's different. This is a different situation. A goal was scored. Legal. Fact. In the end it didn't count. That's it.»

The key issue relates to a miscommunication when Diaz's goal was ruled legal by War Darren England but not cleared by referee Simon Hooper. Liverpool regards this as non-compliance with the rules of the game.

Liverpool have yet to make an official statement requesting a replay and, as a result, the Premier League are standing firm in their decision not to order a replay replay the match.

According to Premier League rules, the only possible recourse is to escalate the matter through the Premier League's arbitration process. The outcome of this can be appealed through the same procedure, although once this has been exhausted the club may appeal to the High Court, but only on procedural grounds (i.e. the arbitration process was not conducted lawfully).

Liverpool's options are further limited as the Premier League does not recognize the Court of Arbitration for Sport, meaning they can only take any case to the London courts.

Liverpool are determining how to lodge a complaint given the unprecedented nature of the incident and the fact that there is no roadmap to follow in such unique circumstances.

The question lingers as to whether it will open the floodgates. when further developments will appear. Addressing the controversy, Klopp said: “It's really unprecedented that part of the refereeing team counted the goal and called it a goal. This is really rare, but it doesn't show up on the scoresheet and we went ahead with the free kick. So this is completely different.

“I’m not angry with any of them (officials), not at all. It's not just about respect, but the only thing people need in general is that we shouldn't follow their lead. Under no circumstances should you go after them. They made a mistake and felt terrible that night, I'm 100% sure. That's enough for me. No one needs further punishment. We should discuss this completely normally, without emotion. I'm not angry.”

Klopp added that he believed the red cards shown to Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota were incorrect. Liverpool lost their appeal against Jones' three-match ban.
