Jurgen Klopp called for a replay of Liverpool's 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur after the offside goal fiasco prevented his side from taking the lead.

Telegraph Sport said such a dramatic move would not be considered by the Premier League, whose rules only allow it as part of disciplinary procedures.

Calls for matches to be replayed after refereeing or other disagreements are nothing new, and teams getting their wish had mixed success.

The Irish players immediately called for the goal to be disallowed, but referee Martin Hansson and his team appeared to have missed the obvious foul and the Irish were eventually thrown out.

Demands for a replay and threats of legal action followed, prompting then-President Sepp Blatter's FIFA has proposed a strange solution – to give Ireland a World Cup group symbol. In the end, the dispute was secretly settled in cash: the Football Association of Ireland received a dubious €5 million “loan” from FIFA, which was eventually written off.

Another notable incident resulted in the final seconds of this match being replayed. England trailed 2-1 until stoppage time when they were awarded a penalty. Leah Williamson, the Lionesses' current injured captain, scored a penalty, but referee Maria Courtes disallowed the goal due to assault and awarded Norway a penalty kick.

However, the Laws of the Game provide for a penalty kick. had to be repeated and UEFA's control, ethics and disciplinary body said it had no choice but to order the players to return to the field in five days.

Williamson duly converted the retaken penalty and after a nerve-wracking 18 seconds of kick-off the game ended 2–2. Both countries eventually reached the final and were again in the same group, but neither made it to the knockout stages.

Villa avoided relegation that season by one point, thanks in part to a draw in the first game of Project Restart, in which their opponents mistakenly failed to score when the ball clearly crossed the line. Goal line technology failed to alert referee Michael Oliver that Villa goalkeeper Orjan Nyland had failed to take a free kick over the line because all cameras were covered and the video assistant referee had not checked the match footage.

This time United did not offer a replay. Villa later helped Bournemouth survive in the Premier League, and the latter did discuss at the end of that season whether they had any way out, but their relegation was ultimately upheld.
