The electric SUV will be global, its production will be launched in two countries. The model will be offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive; in addition, a “charged” GT version is being prepared for it.
The world premiere of the Kia EV5 serial electric cross took place in August at the motor show in Chengdu, China. And today Kia held an event called EV Day in its native Korea, during which it shared new details about the model. The company also updated its “green” plans and showed two completely new electric vehicles – the EV3 compact SUV and the EV4 sedan. We have dedicated a separate article to plans and models with lower indexes, and in this one we will talk about the EV5 crossover.

The brand describes the Five as “designed and engineered with the needs and desires of millennial families in mind.” The model is based on the E-GMP platform, on which other electric cars of the Hyundai-Kia concern are built. It turned out that the EV5 has a 400-volt electrical system, while the cross-hatch Kia EV6 and the flagship crossover Kia EV9, already available on the market, have an 800-volt system.
Exterior features include sophisticated head optics, a plug in place of the radiator grille, retractable door handles and L-shaped rear lights. The brand itself has not yet revealed the dimensions, however, they have long been leaked by the Ministry of Industry of the People's Republic of China: length — 4615 mm, width — 1875 mm, height — 1715 mm, wheelbase — 2750 mm. That is, in terms of its size, the EV5 is not far from the long-wheelbase Kia Sportage.
In the five-seater cabin there is a long-familiar display (tidy and multimedia system displays, each 12.3 inches diagonal), above the central air deflectors there is a row of touch buttons, while physical keys are also placed below. Between the front seats there is a “floating” section with wireless charging and cup holders. There may also be an additional passenger seat in front, although this option is only available for the Chinese EV5. The interior decoration uses eco-leather and fabric containing recycled material from plastic bottles.

Kia also stated that the salon can be turned into a “bedroom” thanks to the folding second-row seats. In addition, there is a small sliding box in the rear (located between the front seats), it has the functions of heating food and cooling drinks. And for the trunk there is a Multi Table shelf, which can be turned into a table. A head-up display, three-zone climate control, seven airbags and many electronic assistants are also announced for the Kia EV5.

The crossover will be offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, that is, with one or two electric motors. In China, the basic Kia EV5 has a 218-horsepower engine and a battery with a capacity of 64 kWh, the power reserve of this version is 530 km, however, this figure is calculated according to the Chinese CLTC cycle (as for all other “heavenly” versions). The “medium” option for China is the same electric motor and battery with a capacity of 88 kWh, the range is already 720 km. The top-end all-wheel drive EV5 will have a 95 hp engine on the rear axle, with a total output of 313 hp. The most expensive SUV also has an 88 kWh battery and a range of 650 km.
Korea has the same electric motors as China, but the EV5 all-wheel drive system is tuned to 306 hp. The crossover's batteries for the Korean market are slightly weaker: the base one has a capacity of 58 kWh, the second one has a capacity of 81 kWh. Data on the model’s range at home will be revealed later. The SUV will also have a “charged” GT version, but there are no details about that yet.
Kia EV5 will be produced at two factories – in the Middle Kingdom and Korea. The debut market for electric cross will be China, where the model will launch before the end of this year. Later, EV5 will reach other countries (including Europe).
