Mercedes-Benz premiered in China an extended version of the new generation E-class sedan; it will be offered only with a 4-cylinder petrol motor.
The global Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan of the W214 generation debuted in April of this year, and now its Chinese extended version with the factory index V214 has been presented. The elongated “eshka” has a long history, dating back to the 60s of the last century, but in China the model in the current form factor has been produced only since 2016 — that’s when the elongated V213 debuted, in which Mercedes-Benz decided to radically redesign body: the rear was designed in the manner of the flagship Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, that is, it was equipped with an additional section behind the rear doors, which required new rear pillars with windows, new rear wings and other expensive changes. The predecessor with the index V212 had a “duty” central insert; the same insert is still used to this day by the Chinese extended versions of the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series.
A more expensive and aristocratic body has not yet led the Mercedes-Benz E-Class L to absolute success; the Chinese Audi A6 L with a central insert is selling better: according to CAAM (China Association of Automobile Manufacturers), 128,551 units were sold from January to September this year. (+21.2% compared to APPG) and 129,407 units. (+42.1%) respectively. The Chinese BMW 5 Series L lagged behind its main competitors: 99,344 units were sold in the first three quarters. (-26.6%). In principle, in the new generation, Mercedes-Benz could have returned to a more budget-friendly version of extending the body with a central insert and would hardly have lost sales as a result, but in the end, to the great joy of the Chinese consumer, it still decided to repeat the trick in the Mercedes-Maybach style.

The V214 generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class L has surpassed its V213 generation predecessor in all key dimensions: overall length of the new model is 5092 mm (+27 mm compared to V213), width — 1880 mm (+20 mm compared to V213), height — 1493 mm (+26 mm compared to the V213), wheelbase — 3094 mm (+17 mm compared to the V213 and +133 mm compared to the global W214 sedan).

From the driver’s seat, the Chinese V214 is practically no different from the global W214, but second-row passengers in the V214, of course, have much more legroom than passengers in a global sedan, and in general the level of comfort is the same as in a luxury car. The second-row seats in the new generation are equipped with elongated cushions and many adjustments, allowing you to choose a comfortable position for sleeping and working.
The Chinese Mercedes-Benz E-Class L is not equipped with powerful engines; it will be equipped only with the M254 turbo-four, which produces 204 hp on the E 260 L version, and 258 hp on the E 300 L version. . The transmission is only a 9-speed hydromechanical “automatic”. For customers who need more power, Mercedes-Benz offers imported standard-wheelbase versions of the E-Class in China, including the sporty Mercedes-AMG. The E-Class L will continue to be produced at the Beijing Benz joint venture in Beijing. Prices for the new generation extended sedan have not yet been announced.
