The compact SUV was made similar to the K3 model, which replaced the Rio. It is expected that the refreshed SUV will make its official premiere before the end of this year.
The Kia Sonet serial crossover is in service in 2020; in the brand’s lineup it is one step below the Seltos model. The debut market for Sonnet was India, where the main production site is located. But at the same time, the SUV is global: it is also sold in the countries of Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. But the five-door, which had undergone a planned restyling, suddenly opened up in China, where the model is not represented at all (Sonet is available in Hong Kong, but this is still a separate market). Photos and characteristics of such a crossover were entered into the database of the local Ministry of Industry. Apparently, Kia finally decided to bring the cross to the Chinese market — immediately in an updated form.

The front and rear parts of the SUV were redesigned, and the design was made in the style of the just declassified Kia K3 sedan and hatchback (this family will soon supplant the “global” Kia Rio). In particular, the crossover also received elongated headlights with sections of running lights “flowing” onto the new bumper and fanged taillights. The rear bumper has also been replaced, plus the radiator grille now has a different design.

Length the Chinese Kia Sonet is 4110 mm — this is 10 mm less than the pre-reform global crossover (the Sonet figure for India is 3995 mm, because there are tax breaks for cars up to four meters long). The remaining dimensions are generally the same: width – 1790 mm, height – 1625 mm, wheelbase – 2500 mm.

The interior of the version for China has not yet been exposed, but photo spies have already looked into the interior of the Indian restyled SUV. So, there won’t be any drastic changes inside: the models will get a different digital instrumentation, and in addition, the climate control control unit will be modernized. By the way, in some places the crossover can also be seven-seater.

In the Chinese market, the Kia Sonet will be offered with a 1.5 naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 115 hp. The Sonet has an engine of similar volume in other countries, but in India the range is different: there the model is equipped with a naturally aspirated 1.2 (83 hp) and a turbocharged 1.0 T-GDI (120 hp), in addition, customers can choose an SUV with a diesel engine 1.5 CRDi (115 hp). In China, the five-door is expected to be equipped with a CVT. The Indian Sonnet is also presented with a traditional five-speed manual transmission, a 6iMT gearbox without a mechanical connection between the pedal and the clutch, a classic six-speed automatic transmission and a seven-speed “robot” with two clutches. But in any case, the drive is exclusively front-wheel drive.
