We continue in Jeep style: BAIC, registered in Russia, is preparing a “budget” crossover BJ30

We are talking about the next generation of Chinese SUV — and so far only for the domestic market. The model will change its image and grow noticeably; it will also get a more powerful engine.

The BJ30 crossover in the Beijing brand range, owned by the BAIC concern, appeared in 2020, today it opens a family with the BJ index. By the way, the “thirty” was not a completely original model: the new index was assigned to the BJ20 SUV, which underwent a large-scale restyling (this cross debuted back in 2015). And soon buyers will be offered a second generation SUV. Photos and main characteristics of such a BAIC Beijing BJ30 were entered into the database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry.

The appearance of the SUV was made less brutal. Exterior features include headlights fused with the radiator grille and vertical blocks of rear lights; The massive wheel arches are gone, as are the sharp edges on the sides. In general, from the front, the new BJ30 turned out to be similar to the younger Jeep models — the Avenger and Renegade crosses. It is curious that another Beijing model, the BJ40 SUV, took a different path: in the new generation, the frame, on the contrary, got rid of the Jeep Wrangler motifs. Although the previous BJ40 was recently registered in Russia, an all-terrain vehicle similar to a Jeep is made for our market by the Kaliningrad Avtotor. Let us remind you that other BAIC models are also assembled in the Russian Federation, but the BJ30 is not among them. However, let's return to the new generation SUV.

Judging by the documents of the certification body , the crossover has noticeably increased in size. The length of the new BAIC Beijing BJ30 is 4730 mm, width – 1910 mm, height – 1757 or 1790 mm (depending on version), wheelbase – 2820 mm. For comparison, the dimensions of the predecessor: 4505/1855/1710 mm, the distance between the axles is 2675 mm.

The Ministry of Industry does not publish photographs of the interior, but photo spies previously looked into the interior of the “second” BJ30. The main features are a giant multimedia system screen rising above the front panel, a two-story central tunnel and a compact box selector. The crossover got rid of round air deflectors.

The second-generation BAIC Beijing BJ30 will be offered with a petrol turbo-four A156T2H 1.5 with a power of 188 hp. The same engine is installed, for example, on the Beijing X7 SUV (“X-Seven” will soon reach the Russian Federation). There is no information about the boxes yet. The same X7 is equipped with 7DCT. Well, the previous BJ30 in China is available with a 4J15T 1.5 petrol turbo engine with a power of 156 hp, which is paired with a classic six-speed automatic transmission. The previous cross was only front-wheel drive, so the new “thirty” most likely does not have all-wheel drive either.

In China, sales of fresh BAIC Beijing BJ30 is expected at the end of this year or the beginning of next year. The predecessor today costs from 105,800 yuan, which is equivalent to approximately 1,406,000 rubles at the current exchange rate. Neither the new nor the old BJ30 was announced for Russia, but it is possible that later the cross in one form or another will join the local BAIC line.
