The current four will also have a “hydrocarbon” successor, but it will receive the A5 index.
< p>In the spring of 2021, insiders reported that the new generation of Audi A4 is expected in 2023. 2023 is coming to an end, but there is still no new “four”, and, as the British magazine Autocar reports, it will not appear in the near future. The fact is that Audi decided to divide electric and “hydrocarbon” models in a new way: when changing generations, electric ones will receive even indices, “hydrocarbon” ones will receive odd indices. Thus, the direct successor to the current Audi A4 will be the new A5, and the A4 index will go to the all-electric version of the model, which was not previously in the range.
The new Audi A5 will obviously debut earlier than the new Audi A4 — perhaps in the coming months or even weeks, it will retain the MLB Evo platform of the current “four” and will receive the long-awaited hybrid power plants; changes in the design relative to the current “four” will be evolutionary.
Current Audi A4 family
In turn, the new, electric Audi A4, according to recent data from British colleagues, will enter the market only at the end of 2025, but its premiere will probably take place much in advance — most likely in 2024. The electric “four” will be based on the new modular platform PPE (Premium Platform Electric), the development of which was delayed for about a year and a half due to the crisis in the digital division of the Cariad concern of the VW concern; this division is developing a new generation integrated operating system for all brands of the concern.< /p>
If the electric “four” has an e-tron prefix, it will be at the level of nameplates indicating the type of power plant, that is, it will be an analogue of the TDI and TFSI inscriptions on “hydrocarbon” cars, and not part of the model name. Compared to the new Audi A5, the “four” will be lower and have shorter overhangs, the sedan and station wagon bodies will remain the same, the interior will be approximately the same as that of the prototype of the mid-size Audi Q6 e-tron crossover presented in September, the production version of which is apparently will be called simply Audi Q6.
The two-engine power plant of the all-wheel drive top version of the new “four” (S4) will produce over 500 hp, the younger versions will be content with a single electric motor on the rear axle. The longest-range version with a battery capacity of about 100 kWh will be able to travel more than 600 km on a single charge.
We would like to add that today the Audi A4 in key markets (China, Europe, USA) is selling worse than its main competitors — BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. It is not yet clear whether the new global Audi A4 will appear in China — perhaps a separate model will be developed for this market as part of the partnership between Audi and SAIC announced last summer.
