The “Unit” has been transformed outside and inside, but has retained the same platform. There will be a choice of petrol or diesel versions. The model will go on sale in the fall.
The third generation BMW 1 Series hatchback with the factory index F40 debuted in 2019. In Europe, the brand's most affordable model is doing quite well: according to Dataforce statistics, in 2023, 86,585 cars were sold there (+30%) – this is second place in BMW's personal standings (the X1 crossover is in the lead, its result is 89,938 units ., +32%). The Audi A3 family is ahead (124,444 units, +18%), but the “unit” has overtaken the Mercedes-Benz A-Class (83,108 units, -10%). And now the transformed hatch is presented. It is curious that the Bavarians consider such a car to be the next, fourth generation with the index F70. Although this is still a restyling, albeit quite large-scale.

The hatchback is based on the same front-wheel drive platform. At the same time, it was announced that the rigidity of the body structure was increased and the suspension was reconfigured. The BMW 1 Series has added 42 mm in length: this figure is now 4361 mm. The wheelbase is the same 2670 mm as its predecessor. Trunk volume still varies from 380 to 1200 liters (except for versions with index 120: from 300 to 1135 liters).

The compact has new bumpers and optics (matrix headlights are available for an extra charge). Large and clearly defined “nostrils” were abandoned – the radiator grille was elongated. And the exposed exhaust pipes remained only in the “charged” M version. In addition, the “unit” will be available with a two-tone color (the roof can be made in black).
Basic new BMW 120
A scoreboard was installed in the cabin – like the rest of the latest BMW models. Multimedia runs on a new generation operating system. Leather trim is not provided – only imitation. The list of standard equipment includes climate control, parking assistant, auto-braking and lane-marking systems. Expensive options include a panoramic roof, a head-up display, wireless charging and an expanded range of electronic assistants. Options include the M sports package.

At the moment, the fresh BMW 1 Series hatchback is available with two petrol and two diesel engines to choose from. Moreover, as expected, the letter i is no longer used in the designation of gasoline versions of the new generation BMW models – it is left for electric cars (diesel cars are still designated by the letter d). There are no mechanics in Europe: all versions are equipped with a seven-speed Steptronic robotic gearbox with two clutches.

The basic five-door is now called the BMW 120, it has a 1.5 turbocharger and a 48-volt starter-generator: this hatch produces 170 hp, and it will reach the first “hundred” in 7.8 seconds. Diesel versions are BMW 118d and BMW 120d, while the older version also received a 48-volt add-on. The 2.0 four-cylinder turbodiesel of the first version produces 150 hp, the second – 163 hp; acceleration time to 100 km/h is 8.3 and 7.9 seconds, respectively.

At the top of the range is the all-wheel drive petrol BMW M135 xDrive with a 300-horsepower 2.0 turbo-four and an adaptive M chassis. This hatch will reach the first “hundred” in 4.9 seconds. Later, a more modest BMW 116 and all-wheel drive BMW 123 xDrive should appear.
Already opened in Europe We are accepting orders for the new BMW 1 Series, but live sales will start in the fall. In Germany, for example, a petrol hatchback costs from 37,900 euros, a diesel – from 38,200 euros. And the BMW M135 xDrive will cost at least 56,200 euros.
