The American company Rivian, which is suffering losses, has carried out a comprehensive modernization of the electric R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck in order to improve their technical characteristics and reduce production costs . Orders for the updated Rivian R1S and R1T are already being accepted.
The platform-sharing Rivian R1S and R1T were launched in 2021, and yesterday the manufacturer presented their second generation, although in fact we are talking about a comprehensive technical upgrade — the design has remained virtually unchanged. The upgrade should improve the consumer appeal of the R1S and R1T and help the company reduce costs, because it continues to incur losses: according to the results of the first quarter of 2024, they amounted to $ 1.45 billion, which is 7.2% more than the losses in the first quarter of last year. Rivian's sales in the first quarter of 2024 amounted to 13,588 electric vehicles, the production volume was 13,980 electric vehicles, by the end of this year the company wants to produce 57,000 cars and, of course, hopes to sell them all. 1/2 2/2
The Rivian R1S and R1T platform received a completely new electronic architecture, more compact and at the same time more productive: the number of electronic control units was reduced from 17 to 7, and the total length of the wiring was reduced by 2.6 km (-20 kg of weight), at the same time its installation was simplified, and repairability was improved. The power of the computer responsible for the operation of electronic driver assistants has been increased tenfold, the number of megapixels in the cameras (there are 11 such cameras in total) has been increased eightfold.
The standard air suspension has been reconfigured to provide greater comfort at the request of customers, and the new design of the wheel rims (from 20 to 22 inches) has improved aerodynamic characteristics compared to the previous ones.
Power plants have become more powerful, there are three to choose from. The twin-engine produces 674 hp. and 1124 Nm, it accelerates to 60 mph (96.56 km/h) in 3.4 seconds. The three-motor power plant (one motor on the front axle, two on the rear) has a total output of 862 hp. and 1495 Nm, acceleration to 60 mph takes 2.9 seconds. The four-engine power plant (one motor for each wheel) produces 1039 hp. and 1624 Nm, acceleration to 60 mph takes 2.5 seconds, and the four-engine Rivian runs a quarter mile (402 m) in 10.5 seconds. Before the update, the range of available power ranged from 540 to 847 hp

Upgraded, more energy-efficient batteries, depending on the capacity chosen by the consumer and the specific modification of the electric vehicle, provide a range on a single charge in the range from 434 to 675 km according to the EPA cycle (these figures have not yet been confirmed by certification). Before the update, the range ranged from 410 to 660 km.

There are also some minor design updates: in addition to the wheels, there is a new LED filling of the headlights and taillights; by the end of the year, adaptive headlights will be offered as an option. The interior has updated trim materials, graphics of the instrument and multimedia screens (the interface uses the latest version of the Unreal Engine game engine), configuration of the ambient lighting and design of the storage compartments. The new glass roof can be adjusted for transparency. Wireless charging for smartphones has become more powerful. The updated audio system provides a cleaner and richer sound. Climate control thanks to the new heat pump works faster, quieter and requires less energy.
