The row over Angela Rayner's council house was partly the result of «misogyny and classism», the deputy leader of the Labor Party said.
Ms Rayner has faced questions about whether she paid the correct amount of capital gains tax. when the property she owned was sold in 2015.
Greater Manchester Police began investigating Ms Rayner over whether she had incorrectly declared her permanent address on the electoral register, which is a criminal offence.< /p>
Last month the force announced it would take no further action. It later emerged that HM Revenue and Customs had determined that Ms Rayner did not owe tax on the sale of the house.
Speaking after she was cleared, Ms Rayner said the claims in relation to the property were “deliberate slander.”
She told The News Agents podcast on Monday: “I think misogyny and classism have been very hot topics. All you have to do is see how I'm described and you'll see some trolls, I'm used to it.
Interview with Angela Rayner Listen«I'm not an Eton boy in a fancy suit. I'm a council estate girl and I had to prove my worth. And that's okay.»
She added: “I will always make sure I do my homework because I never want to let people down. I don't want them to think that working class people in this country are stupid or don't know what they're talking about.
“They often know and budget because they have because the times have They are heavy.»
Asked if he thought the claims against the council house were an attempt to delegitimize it, she said: «I think it was an attempt to clip my wings and distract attention from their appalling performance in the housing sector.
“Michael Gove was in a situation where he did not carry out housing reform through his supporters.
“They wanted to end Section 21 on no-fault evictions; they didn't. They should have been planning, but they didn't.
“They have completely failed on landlord and renter issues, and I have pushed that agenda. And I think it was a deliberate libel.»
She described the media attention on the issue following the announcement of the police investigation as «difficult on a personal level» and «frustrating.»
The row over Ms Rayner's home, following allegations of an unauthorized biography of Lord Ashcroft, a former Conservative peer, centered on allegations that her brother Darren Bowen lived in the house she owned in Vicarage Road, Stockport, Greater Manchester.
Neighbors claimed she lived with her then-husband at his home in nearby Lowndes Lane. However, she was recorded on the electoral register as living at Vicarage Road.
Ms Rayner has always maintained that she resides at the house in Vicarage Road and that this is her main place of residence. If she did live with her husband, she would have to pay capital gains tax of around £2,500 on the sale of her own house.
She sold her house in March 2015 for £127,500. , making a profit of £48,500. Because it was designated as her principal residence, the gains were not subject to capital gains tax. Under tax law, married couples who are both individual property owners can only have one main residence.
Stockport Council also issued a statement last month saying it would not be pursuing any further action against Ms Rayner.< /p>
