How will early elections take place in France?

French voters will elect 577 deputies to the National Assembly after Emmanuel Macron called early voting after he was defeated in European Assembly election in Marine Le Pen's hands.

Legislative elections are often low-key affairs compared to France's powerful president, but another defeat for Ms Le Pen's Rally could leave Mr Macron a lame duck in the last years of his term.

Reforms introduced in 2002 mean that legislative elections usually follow shortly after presidential elections, unless there is early voting during the presidential term.

What's happening?

If the French president's party wins a majority in the Assembly elections, he will be able to appoint a prime minister.

But if another party, such as the National Rally, wins a majority, they will be able to choose the prime minister. a minister who can effectively govern the country.

When is the vote held? ?

Legislative elections are held in two rounds, one week apart.
