Apple has entered the artificial intelligence (AI) race with a series of updates to its iPhone software and a deal with OpenAI that will add ChatGPT to hundreds of millions of smartphones.

iPhone users will soon be able to use artificial intelligence technology to answer emails, write blog posts and presentations, create synthetic images and create customized emojis.

The tech giant also unveiled a major update to its digital assistant Siri, bringing a voice assistant , which he first launched in 2011, the ability to answer more complex queries using the power of OpenAI technology.

The new features, which the company calls “Apple Intelligence,” come as tech companies aggressively embrace artificial intelligence. Google has already launched a series of artificial intelligence tools in the form of the Gemini chatbot, and Microsoft has struck a deal with OpenAI to bring its products to Windows.

Apple is lagging behind the crowd, but on Monday it made an attempt to introduce AI-inspired changes intelligence in its latest smartphone operating system, iOS 18, as well as macOS and iPad.

When will iOS 18 be released? released?

Apple's iOS 18 smartphone software, an update that will bring new features, is expected in September. It is expected that access to other equipment such as Macbooks and iPads will appear at the same time.

What did Apple announce and what is Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence is the tech giant's addition to a new wave of artificial intelligence tools coming to market, but the iPhone maker says its technology will include a variety of additional privacy features , which will set the company apart from its competitors.

Like its competitors, many of Apple's new AI products are based on so-called big language models—artificial intelligence tools trained on billions of pages of books and articles that can generate human-sounding text or speech.

Tools include products that can speed up answering emails, taking notes, summarizing meetings, or transcribing audio. Most of Apple's new AI features will appear in various programs on phones and laptops and will be built into the Siri voice assistant rather than a separate app.

Apple says its AI tools are processed on the device. yourself or on Apple's own servers, rather than using third-party data centers or Internet infrastructure. This means its products must be safer.

Tim Cook, Apple CEO, said: “Our unique approach combines generative AI with the user's personal context to deliver truly actionable information. And it can access this information in a completely private and secure way to help users do what matters most to them.”

In addition to its own tools, Apple will also offer free access to ChatGPT on its iPhones – without having to create an account.

A key element of the latest artificial intelligence tools is writing. AI chatbots can deliver human text and detailed language. Apple says its artificial intelligence technology will be able to correct and edit text in Mail, Notes, Pages and Safari.

In Mail, Apple will use artificial intelligence to redraw email responses on demand or insert summaries and bullet points. The tools will also suggest changing the tone of the draft message – for example, making it “friendly” or “professional”. It will also be able to provide almost automatic replies to emails (called “smart replies”) that can be sent with one click.

The company's new AI writing tools will appear in various applications, so it will offer AI suggestions for blog posts in Safari or meeting minutes in Notes.

The company has added additional tools that can automatically transcribe and record calls from the Phone app and generate an instant call summary.

    Smarter Siri and ChatGPT

Siri, first launched in 2011, was one of the first digital voice assistants on a smartphone. But it has never been universally popular, and most people rely on it for simple tasks such as making hands-free calls or asking about the weather.

Apple is aiming to change that by adding a range of new AI features. Siri will now be able to interact with more apps and perform tasks that involve navigating between different apps.

For example, if you ask him to play a song that a friend recommended in Messages, it will appear in the Music app. Asking Siri to “send BBQ photos on Saturday” will find the images you want from your library and add them to the message.

Siri will also be able to act as a sort of guide for iOS – automatically adjusting settings or finding information in your files.

Finally, Apple has promised to make Siri even smarter as part of its ChatGPT deal, effectively merging OpenAI’s chatbot with its own digital assistant for more complex queries.

Apple says, “Siri can leverage ChatGPT’s expertise when it’s useful. Users are asked questions before sending any questions to ChatGPT, along with any documents or photos, and then Siri directly provides the answer.” ChatGPT will also be integrated with Apple’s new writing features.

“Privacy protections are built into users who access ChatGPT—their IP addresses are hidden, and OpenAI doesn't store requests,” Apple adds.

    AI-powered art and emoji

AI-powered art was one of the the most obvious. manifestations of this technology: digitally created images of the Pope in a down jacket or Donald Trump being arrested by the New York police have gone viral on social networks.

Apple has added tools for creating images and art using artificial intelligence – similar to tools like DALL-E or Stable Diffusion.

Apple's update will allow users to rely on the same type of technology that previously created a series of AI-generated viral images

Users can access a new app called Image Playground, which can create images in three styles – animation, illustration and sketch – and either describe the image using text or choose from predefined templates or themes. The tool will also be built into various apps such as Messages and Notes.

In Messages, it can be used to send personalized stickers to friends. In Notes, you can use it with Apple Pencil on iPad to turn a rough drawing into a work of art.

Users will also be able to create their own emoji, which Apple calls Genmojis, using text prompts.

Satellite messages and everything else in iOS 18

While artificial intelligence tools are making headlines, iOS 18 will bring even more features to iPhone.

Satellite text messages include. Apple is effectively aiming to end rural black spots for iPhone users by allowing them to send text messages by connecting their phone to passing satellites rather than broadcast towers.

The tool is limited to iMessage and SMS texts, but means your phone can still be useful without a terrestrial signal.

Apple also announced new privacy features like secret hidden folders and locked apps on your phone. You will need FaceID to open them and reveal their contents.

The company has also launched a new Passwords app, similar to products like 1Password or Bitwarden, which can be used to store your passwords for various apps and unlock with a master password.

Which phones can support this? use Apple Intelligence?

Apple intends to do most of the processing of its new artificial intelligence applications on users' phones, rather than relying on Internet connections or third-party servers.

The company said this means some new features will be limited to its most powerful gadgets, such as the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or the latest iPad and Macbook models.
