ROSTOV-ON-DON, June 11, Yulia Nasulina. The court in Rostov-on-Don extended the terms of detention or house arrest for those involved in a high-profile case about the organization illegal markets in the Aksai district of the Rostov region, a source in the region’s law enforcement agencies said.
In total, there are 16 defendants in the case, including the former head of the Aksai district administration Vitaly Borzenko, the owner of the Aksai markets Karim Babaev and a number of entrepreneurs. Depending on their role, they are charged with articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation on organizing a criminal community or participating in it, fraud, legalization of funds acquired by other persons through criminal means, and illegal entrepreneurship. The case has been pending in court since July last year.
“The defendants in the case were counting on the termination of criminal prosecution under the decriminalized article on illegal business. However, during the hearing, the court extended the preventive measures for the defendants in the form of detention, house arrest and recognizance not to leave,” the agency’s interlocutor said. He recalled that in April of this year the Russian Federation adopted a law mitigating liability for a number of economic articles.
According to investigators, in 2000, members of a criminal organization illegally took possession of nine municipal land plots in the Aksai district of the Rostov region with an area of almost 35 hectares and worth about 453 million rubles, organizing wholesale and retail markets «Atlant» there, «Diamond», «Vegetable» and «Construction». Income from illegal business activities amounted to at least 236 million rubles, the press service of the regional courts reported.
In April 2021, security forces began inspections in the markets. Trading platforms where about 15 thousand workers worked were closed.
