    Alpine A290 production hot hatch: cool design, modest battery and maximum 220 hp.

    The French brand Alpine, part of the Renault Group, presented the first production model from the new electric line – the A290 hot hatch, made based on the Renault 5, it will go on sale this summer at a price of 38,000 euros.

    The original electric hatch Renault 5 premiered in February of this year, and today its sports brother named Alpine has been declassified A290, the forerunner of which was last year's Alpine A290_β concept. Both hatchbacks are built on the AmpR Small platform, formerly known as the CMF-B EV, a renaming made to emphasize the importance of the Ampere division, which is responsible for the development of electric vehicles within the Renault Group.

    Due to the original aerodynamic plumage and specific decor, the Alpine A290 is slightly longer and wider than the Renault 5: the overall length of the hot hatch is 3990 mm, the width is 1820 mm, the height is 1520 mm, the wheelbase is 2530 mm. The suspension (front – McPherson type, rear – independent multi-link) received sports settings, but not at the expense of ride smoothness – thanks to the hydraulic bumpers in the shock absorber struts. More powerful Brembo brakes with 4-piston calipers are installed in the front wheels, the diameter of the front brake discs is 320 mm, the rear – 288 mm. There are four wheel design options to choose from, the standard tire size is 225/40 R 19. Headlights with rally-style crosses are standard equipment. Multi-colored body paint with decorative stripes is an option.

    The interior of the Alpine A290 is essentially the same as that of the Renault 5, that is, with a touch of nostalgia for the 1980s, but with special decorative elements from Alpine. It’s interesting that you can choose genuine leather trim, which Mini, one of Alpine’s main competitors, recently abandoned. The 10.25-inch screen and 10.1-inch screen get Alpine-specific graphics: the instrument screen, for example, uses a mountain range and triangles theme, and the multimedia screen has telemetry and racing simulator tabs with tasks for beginners and experienced pilots (part tasks can only be completed on the racing track). The Devialet audio system was developed specifically for the Alpine A290; the Renault 5 does not have one. Trunk volume – 326 l.

    The original three-spoke Alpine A290 steering wheel is equipped with a blue RCH rotary control, which controls regenerative braking, and a red OV button for overtaking – when pressed for 30 seconds, the peak power of the electric motor is available, so you need to carefully calculate the maneuver. 15 seconds after the “shot”, you can activate peak power for another 5 seconds. The operation of the electric motor is accompanied by two dramatic synthetic soundtracks to choose from, but, fortunately, both can be discarded.

    At the start of sales, the Alpine A290 will be offered in four trim levels – GT, GT Premium, GT Performance and GTS; they differ from each other not only in equipment and finishing, but also in the maximum output of the electric motor: on the GT and GT Premium versions it is 180 hp . and 285 Nm, on GT Performance and GTS versions – 220 hp. and 300 Nm. The GT and GT Premium versions reach the first hundred in 7.4 seconds, the top speed is limited to 160 km/h. The GT Performance and GTS versions can accelerate to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds, and their top speed limit is increased to 170 km/h.

    The curb weight of the hot hatch is 1479 kg. There is one battery for all versions, with a capacity of 52 kWh, its full charge is enough for approximately 380 km of run on the WLTP cycle (this figure has not yet been confirmed by certification), and in combat mode the battery, of course, will last much less – hardly more than 200 km. The maximum charging power is only 100 kW, you can replenish the charge from 15 to 80% in 30 minutes.

    The Alpine A290 will be produced in the same place as the Renault 5 – at the Renault plant in Douai, France. Accepting orders for the hot hatch in continental Europe will begin before the end of summer, deliveries will begin before the end of the year.
