KAZAN, June 14, Adelya Ziatdinova. Three-time Olympic champion in synchronized swimming Svetlana Kolesnichenko said that she cannot comment on the actions of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) because she initially did not have a chance to get to the Olympics in Paris.
IOC Director of Communications Mark Adams said on Wednesday that there is no exact deadline for admitting Russians to the Games. At the moment, Russians have won licenses for the Games in seven sports – wrestling, judo, taekwondo, cycling (road), rowing, trampoline jumping, tennis. In Paris, they will be able to compete in neutral status, but their compliance with the necessary criteria must be assessed by a special IOC commission consisting of three people.
“I had no choice regarding the Olympic Games, they immediately said that team sports are not allowed. Therefore, I cannot say anything, I am an athlete, and an athlete should not perform political functions and talk about this,” Kolesnichenko said.
The admission of Russian athletes in neutral status to the Olympic Games in Paris is handled by a three-person panel appointed by the IOC, which includes IOC Vice President Nicole Hewertz, the famous former Spanish basketball player Pau Gasol, and the Olympic table tennis champion from South Korea, Yu Seung-min.
