New MG ZS will challenge Dacia Duster and Toyota Yaris Cross: first image

It is assumed that the premiere of the SUV will take place this year, in a few months. Such a new product will probably hit the market in 2025.

The British brand MG today belongs to the Chinese concern SAIC, the production of cars is established in the Middle Kingdom. The compact crossover ZS debuted in 2016 and underwent restyling in 2019; It also has a completely “green” version. In the European market, the SUV is generally doing well: according to JATO Dynamics, over the past year the model sold 90,415 units, which is 97% more than in 2022. For comparison, the figure for one of the leaders in the segment — Toyota Yaris Cross — for the same period amounted to 176,285 units (29% more).

Now MG developers are preparing a new ZS, which, according to preliminary data, will be presented in a few months. Officially, the company keeps the appearance of the future SUV secret, although its patent images leaked to the Internet at the beginning of last month. These pictures formed the basis for the rendering of the new product, which colleagues from the Spanish publication Motor.es shared with us.

Judging by the image, the new product will have head optics of a narrower shape and with a different light pattern. The brand logo can move from the radiator grille higher and will be located centrally between the headlights. The “grill” itself will likely become larger and have a different shape, as well as a pattern in the form of cells arranged in horizontal rows. Below you can see a small central air intake and fog lights on the sides.

It is expected that MG will rework the rear of the ZS crossover, changing the shape and “filling” of the lights. The proportions will most likely remain approximately the same, only the length may increase a little. Note that the dimensions of the current SUV are 4323 x 1809 x 1625 mm, and the distance between the axles is 2581 mm. As noted in the publication, the interior of the new product will have a large touchscreen infotainment system, and the list of equipment will include a set of cameras with a 360-degree view.

It is possible that the new MG ZS will share technology with the MG 3, which debuted in February of this year. Let us remind you that it is equipped with a hybrid installation without the possibility of recharging from the mains. The Hybrid+ is based on a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine with a power of 102 hp, working in tandem with a 136-horsepower electric motor and a battery with a modest capacity of 1.83 kWh. The total output of the system is 194 hp. The MG 3 may only have front-wheel drive, but the ZS will likely have an all-wheel drive option (this version is expected to debut in 2025).

Competitors in the European market for the new MG ZS are predicted to be the already mentioned Toyota Yaris Cross and the third generation Dacia Duster, which debuted at the end of last fall . Let us remind you that the top version of the Romanian brand SUV is also equipped with a hybrid unit, its total output is 140 hp.

According to preliminary data, the starting price tag of the new MG ZS will not exceed 20 thousand euros (equivalent to approximately 1.91 million rubles at the current exchange rate). Note that in the home market, Romania, for a hybrid Dacia Duster they ask for at least 26,650 euros (about 2.55 million rubles).
