HONOR MagicBook Pro 16 review: workstation in a sleek design

Can a laptop in a business-class thin and light design be powerful enough for creative professionals while also being suitable for gaming and other entertainment? Maybe HONOR decided by creating MagicBook Pro 16 (about 16) – the first model of the new MagicBook Pro series. Let's get acquainted with the new product in the review.

    Design

HONOR MagicBook Pro 16 is both lightweight and has an interesting appearance. With a 16-inch display diagonal, the laptop weighs (without power supply) 1.79 kilograms, which means it won’t be a burdensome burden in a backpack or bag.
HONOR tried to make the design of the MagicBook Pro 16 fresh, but did not abandon strict lines. Among the materials in the case, metal predominates: the laptop is available in two colors – white and purple, both of which are made using 3D coloring technology, with unusual gradients and shade transitions. I also liked the matte finish – it is extremely practical, it does not retain stains and fingerprints.

By the way, the design The hinges of the laptop lid are such that it can open 180 degrees relative to the chassis – the convenience of this solution can be appreciated, for example, when you work lying down. The same lid passes the one-handed opening test, for some this is an important characteristic of a laptop.

    Display

The laptop’s 16-inch matrix is called HONOR FullView 16 (full review), where 16 is the screen diagonal. Technically, it is an IPS (liquid crystal display technology) panel with a resolution of 3072 x 1920 pixels, 500 nits of brightness, a refresh rate of up to 165 hertz and a response time of 3 ms. The last two characteristics will be appreciated by fans of eSports games, when the speed of the screen and the user's response is critical.
Thin side frames of the screen are only 2.36 millimeters, which makes it possible to obtain a usable area of 93%. The aspect ratio is 16:10, which is convenient for working with office applications, as it allows you to see more content without scrolling. At the same time, coverage of 100% of the DCI-P3 palette (color space) and 100% sRGB (a standard for representing the color spectrum), combined with accurate calibration with color deviation ΔE<0.5, allows the laptop to be used by creative industry professionals to work with 2D and 3D graphs, photographs, video editing.

Using an IPS panel gives several advantages over fashionable OLED (organic light-emitting diode) – firstly, it is “correct” color rendition without distortions into too saturated shades. Secondly, IPS is devoid of PWM ripple, which means the user’s eyes will be comfortable. The MagicBook Pro 16's screen has received two TÜV Rheinland certifications for blue-light reduction and flicker-free.
The matrix has a matte anti-reflective coating – together with high peak brightness, this allows you to work on the MagicBook Pro 16 even in direct sunlight. There is also a “dynamic brightness” function, which was transferred to laptops from HONOR’s flagship smartphones. By adjusting the intensity of the backlight, it imitates natural light and reduces tension in the eye muscles during prolonged use. And the e-book mode switches color rendering to shades of gray, which allows you to comfortably read books and long texts from the laptop screen.

HONOR MagicBook Pro 16 received a full-size keyboard with a numeric keypad. There is also a two-level backlight that supports automatic operation thanks to a light sensor. This is a convenient short-travel keyboard on which you can comfortably work with large amounts of data. In the upper right corner of the keyboard there is a power key with a built-in fingerprint scanner.
The large touchpad is easy to use and supports many gestures. Integrated keys have a loud click when pressed.

    Performance, ports, communications and sound

HONOR MagicBook Pro 16 received an Intel Core Ultra 5 125H processor with support for artificial intelligence technologies at the platform level. The chipset consists of four productive, eight efficient and two energy-efficient cores. The maximum frequency is up to 4.5 gigahertz. A powerful integrated Intel Arc graphics coprocessor with ray tracing support is responsible for working with graphics.
This combination provides high performance in various work tasks, which allows, for example, content makers to effectively use demanding professional applications. And the power of the graphics subsystem is enough for games, including PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds), League of legends and other popular projects.
24 gigabytes of fast LPDDR5x RAM (LPDDR5x) is enough, for example, when processing a large number of images or editing 4K video. For data storage, MagicBook Pro 16 is equipped with a fast PCIe (solid state drive) 4.0 SSD with a capacity of 1 terabyte. The second slot is also hidden in the depths of the laptop.

To cool the components, the MagicBook Pro 16 used a system with multiple heat pipes and two fans. Its operation does not strain the ears – even under load, the laptop does not produce sound above 50 decibels. But more importantly, HONOR managed to make the cooling efficient. Thus, with the performance profile enabled and an energy-consuming task such as 3D rendering, the surface of the case did not heat up above 47 degrees Celsius.

A large workstation, which is essentially an alternative to a desktop PC, needs a full set of ports. On the left side there is an audio jack, one USB-C (USB-C) 3.2 Gen.2 and one USB-C Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C Thunderbolt). On the back there is HDMI 2.0 (HDMI), two USB-A 3.2 Gen.1 and a power connector. I would, of course, like to see a slot for a memory card and a Kensington lock, but they are not here.
The wireless adapter supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3. The model is equipped with a triple antenna, which provides a 360-degree network connection without “dead zones” and helps to catch a signal at a distance of up to 360 meters.

What you don't often see in laptops is such a well-thought-out audio system – the HONOR MagicBook Pro 16 supports spatial audio with surround sound. The six-speaker audio system was called HONOR Spatial Audio.

    Soft

“Out of the box” the laptop runs on a licensed version of Windows 11 – an operating system that does not need any special introduction. HONOR has traditionally integrated its proprietary software. For example, the user has access to the HONOR Device Clone utilities for quick migration from an old laptop and the HONOR Share ecosystem technology for quick file exchange between brand devices.

    Autonomy

The laptop has a large 75 watt-hour battery. The final battery life largely depends on the screen settings – at 55% backlight level and 60 Hz, the laptop worked in the office scenario for more than 10 hours without recharging. If you turn the backlight to maximum and use a 165 Hz screen refresh rate, this figure will decrease.
You can charge the MagicBook Pro 16 with any compatible USB-C charger, but in this case the performance power consumption profile will not be available. It can be enabled when using the included 135 watt power supply.

    Total

HONOR did it a balanced laptop that is suitable for any use case, including even graphics processing and gaming. With all this, the model turned out to be light for its size and with quiet cooling, which is important for many users.
HONOR MagicBook Pro 16 went on sale on June 21 at a price of 149,990 rubles in purple and 154,990 rubles in white. During the period from June 21 to July 22, there is a special offer with a discount of 25,000 rubles on purchases.
