A fashionable AMOLED screen, a camera with optical stabilization and half a terabyte of memory — perhaps we are talking about a flagship with a shocking price tag? Not at all, the new realme 12 received options from older models, remaining a democratic device. We'll get acquainted with the basic model of the «numbered» line of realme in the review.
Design
The new product has a strict design, as they say in realme, inspired by “luxury watches”. In other words, there is a massive round chamber block on the back panel — partly its dimensions are hidden by the included case.
In case materials Plastic predominates, although it is of high quality — for example, the back panel is of sufficient thickness and does not bend under your fingers. It has a matte texture, with a central edging, the texture of which can be felt when touched.
On the right side we find the power button and the volume rocker. At the top there is a jack for wired headphones (which is already becoming a rarity), at the bottom there is a combined tray for SIM cards and a memory card.
The smartphone is available in two colors: “Dawn Blue” and “Malachite Green”. By the way, realme 12 claims dust and moisture protection at the IP54 level (IP54).
Display
realme 12 has a 6.67-inch diagonal AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, frequency of 120 Hz and peak brightness of 2000 nits. The screen occupies 92.65% of the front panel area.
The high brightness of the matrix is useful not only when viewing HDR content (image and video processing technology that allows you to get a higher range between the lightest and darkest parts of the picture) — the realme 12 screen remains easy to read even in direct sunlight.
Here, realme has used on-screen water detection technology, which ignores phantom clicks from water droplets and improves the accuracy of touches with wet fingers. Despite the fact that the matrix is covered with tempered glass, a protective film is applied on top of it — a small thing, but nice.
Performance, communications and software
The platform for realme 12 is the SoC from Qualcomm — well-known from the «middle class» of smartphones Snapdragon 685. This is an 8-core solution, manufactured using a 6-nm process technology, with a maximum frequency of 2.8 GHz and an Adreno 610 video accelerator.
In the AnTuTu benchmark, the smartphone scores about 400 thousand points. By modern standards, not much, but in real use, the smartphone feels fast and responsive.
Although the processor itself is “cold,” realme has supplemented it with an effective cooling system with a stainless steel vapor chamber with an area of 4,392 square millimeters and 12,436 square millimeters of graphite layer. As a result, the 12th turned out to be a smartphone that is not prone to overheating — even hour-long gaming sessions do not lead to the body heating up by more than 40 degrees Celsius.
Back in 2023, realme was one of the first companies to bring large storage to the budget smartphone class — realme 12 went further: two memory configurations of 8/256 and 8/512 GB are available at the start of sales. In fact, realme 12 is the only smartphone cheaper than 26,000 rubles for which 512 GB is available. The smartphone's memory can simultaneously store: 1,000 videos, 1,000 songs, 10,000 photos, 100 daily apps, and 5 multiplayer games.
The smartphone has a full range of interfaces and communications of a modern gadget — from WiFi AC (AC) to an NFC chip (NFC). The latter received a clever antenna that provides 360° coverage, for example, when paying at the checkout, realme 12 can be brought to the terminal from either side.
Out of the box, realme 12 runs on the new version of the realme UI 5.0 (UA 5.0) shell based on Android 14. It has a lot of interesting features, such as detailed customization of the interface to suit the user’s requirements. Of course, realme UI remains a “light” shell, devoid of a clutter of pre-installed software and built-in advertising.
Camera
The new model of the “numbered” line received a main camera based on a 50-megapixel Sony LYT-600 sensor (Sony ELYT-600) — a sensor in the sub-flagship segment, which is used, for example, in the more expensive realme 12+. And what you don’t expect to see in this segment is optical stabilization, which is used in the f/1.9 aperture lens.
Paired with it is a 2-megapixel depth sensor, which is used to create spectacular bokeh in portrait mode. Finally, the front camera can take photos at a maximum resolution of 16 MP.
Looking at the pictures taken from the realme 12 camera, it is difficult to immediately guess the class of smartphone that took them. In terms of color balance, detail, and autofocus speed, the smartphone shows its best side. Perhaps, compared to more expensive models, there is a difference in image processing — the camera is prone to not very natural tones, for example, the sky.
High sensor resolution made it possible to implement an effective 2x digital zoom — such pictures do not differ in quality from 1X, but they offer a closer look at objects.
The smartphone was given support for NightEye Engine technology (night shooting mode). And it really provides high-quality shooting when there is little light around: the automation “pulls out” shadows, very carefully processing point light sources.
Sound, safety and autonomy
In 2024, manufacturers are trying to provide stereo sound to almost all smartphones, at least in the “middle class” — realme 12 is no exception, the multimedia speaker “sings along” with the conversational one with additional sound guides in the upper edge. The quality is quite good, the maximum volume is sufficient with a reserve.
The under-screen fingerprint scanner is traditionally shifted to the bottom frame of the screen for realme — a controversial decision from an ergonomic point of view. However, this did not affect either the reading accuracy or the unlocking speed. There is also facial recognition based on the work of the selfie camera.
The battery capacity of realme 12 is standard by the standards of modern smartphones — 5000 mAh. The energy-efficient platform, economical AMOLED screen and software optimization have done their job: the model can work on a single charge for a day and a half. The smartphone can “digest” charging power of 67 W, although, interestingly, the kit includes 80 W SUPERVOOC (SUPERVOOC) charging. Fully charging the phone takes less than 50 minutes, and it replenishes 50% of the charge in 19 minutes.

realme once again sets the level for “people’s” smartphones — 120 Hz AMOLED screen, sub-flagship camera with optical stabilization and 512 GB of memory in an affordable model.
