ISTANBUL, July 10Two baggage handlers at Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW) were arrested for stealing valuables from passengers' luggage and face up to 14 years in prison, officials said. Wednesday Sabah newspaper.
The publication mentions at least three incidents that occurred with passengers of a large airline that flies to 47 countries. However, its name is not specified.
According to the newspaper, on January 3, a passenger flying from Northern Cyprus to Istanbul found empty boxes in his luggage instead of a laptop and an expensive watch. On January 7, a woman flying to Amsterdam lost her laptop, where she filed a complaint through the Turkish consulate. A similar incident occurred the next day: upon arriving in London from Istanbul, a Turkish woman discovered that her suitcase had been broken into, and unknown persons had stolen a laptop, three diamond necklaces, eight necklaces and other jewelry.
The attackers were fooled by the signals generated by the stolen laptops.
» During a search in the apartments of two airport employees — Emre B. and Enver T. — items and valuables stolen from luggage were found, including laptops, necklaces, headphones, watches, and speakers,” the publication writes.
Both employees admitted guilt and said that for the last two months they had been opening luggage and even taking chocolate and lighters from it. They sold the stolen things, and divided the money received; the men kept some of the things for themselves.
Two criminal cases have been opened, the loaders face up to 14 years in prison.
